All Major Problems That Affected Soviet Union Also Affect United States Today

When the world's only supposed superpower starts coughing up blood and seems to not even have the political will to provide 1/6th of its citizens with healthcare, it's hard to not compare it to another federal union whose multitudes of small problems led to a spectacular demise. It may seem counter-intuitive to say that USA has Soviet Union's ailments (due to supposed enormous differences in the degree of state capitalism) but comparisons become eerie once they start being made.

1) Structurally and logistically determined inability to satisfy consumer demand for better and more accessible healthcare, education, and healthy food. Economic priority is on building, maintaining, and expanding vast conventional and thermonuclear weaponry rather than on improving quality of life for all Americans. Political leadership tolerates increasing suffering of the citizenry and deterioration of infrastructure to maintain military power projection capabilities abroad.

United States News

2) Rigid ideological indoctrination of most of the population and public officials that prevents pragmatic discussion on the highest levels concerning modernization efforts. All serious talk of modernization is instinctively seen as treasonous by military and major party leadership who have vested personal interests in perpetuating the status quo. Not only is state orthodoxy not questioned by major media but there is full support of efforts to violently spread American style socioeconomic organization abroad.

3) Deteriorating food quality due to the architecture of means of food production and distribution. Inability of subsidized state capitalist enterprises to provide fresh non-adulterated produce. Rise in popularity of decentralized small farms to fill holes in supply by large, inefficient, and increasingly hazardous state supported large farms. Situation is still not bad enough for homeowners to grow food on small plots of land yet.

4) Severe military overexpansion overseas. The state is going broke supporting numerous satellite regimes in South America, Asia, Central Europe, and Middle East through maintenance of hundreds of bases and conventional deployments.

5) Lack of frank discussion on national problems since they are not allowed by a handful of state subsidized media conglomerates that provide most of the information to the citizenry (they have vested interests in the status quo just like political and military leadership does). Severe self censorship by news outlets that do not deviate from the party line in any meaningful way.

6) Inability to project soft power due to serious erosion of economic strength. Utilization of the only tools left that elites can use to project global power, namely military force and threats of force.

7) Ideological stagnation, exhaustion, and moral bankruptcy. The average educated citizen does not believe in the party line about the American dream anymore or that United States is the wealthiest and freest society and a force for good in the world. The ideological exhaustion and disbelief is increasingly present among public officials who just mouth the party lines. Spread of fatalism and apathy among the general population. Some of the educated now become rabid reactionaries and try to go back to the days when the ideological fervor was more present (libertarians, imperial reformers who want to go back to the days of state capitalism in the 1950s, elderly who remember when economic base was expanding rather than shrinking, etc). Efforts to "improve" or "fine tune" American state capitalism increasing as well as efforts to scrap it altogether.

8)The biggest and most advanced gulag prison system that is still expanding and increasingly relying on prison labor for manufactured goods. Mass arrests are made for non-violent consensual acts even in the face of enormous economic costs and violation of human rights. Disregard for human rights as a blind eye is turned towards the prison system (now the biggest in the world) that is dangerously overcrowded and where torture (inmate rape and other abuse) is allowed to continue. Human rights violations as some ethnic groups are arbitrarily and disproportionately targeted for imprisonment (higher arrests for drug possession among blacks/Hispanics than whites disproportionate to the reported use).

9) The politically active young people do not believe what they see in mainstream media anymore. They increasingly turn to alternative or foreign sources for information about their own country rather than continue to listen to the blatant lies and propaganda on major news networks. Major news increasingly focusing on problems of other countries, trivial entertainment, and support of military establishment than introspection on declining national strength and health.

10) Increased reliance on middlemen (Wall Mart) that connect the American consumer with goods made in other countries (Japan, South Korea, Germany, etc) since quality of domestic industry and workforce is declining. Domestic industry can't satisfy the consumer demands of society even if the state officials found political will.

11) Deterioration in the quality of the American worker that cannot be reversed due to state's inability to provide modern education for most citizens. Education system itself is tainted by propaganda.

12) Most of the population is isolated from the outside world and has no idea what it's like to live in an advanced society. The elderly are particularly affected. Only 1/3 of population have passports and have been abroad (mostly state officials/businessmen/educated/urban/suburban upper classes and their families). Increasing psychological restlessness among the young and escape from cities in the rotting industrial heartland. Increase in mindless hedonism and drinking as a form of escape.

13) Western Europe is now seen as a model civilization to emulate and aspire to rather than just a different system of development. Psychological and moral surrender in trying to conceptualize and evolve American state capitalism towards greater heights. Western Europeans increasingly looked at as more fun and developed in terms of knowing how to live and what values to have.

14) Both wings of the pro-oligarchic political establishment (The more nationalistic and introspective Democratic wing that wants to fine tune American style state capitalism and the more internationalist Republican wing that wants to spread it abroad) suffering from gerontocracy rule. Elderly now predominate in the legislative like they did in the 80s in China and Soviet Union. They are unable to effectively conceptualize modernization efforts and thus defer to reactionary defensive mindset while suppressing more youthful reformers. The two political wings were always nearly identical at the center but are now practically merging as a result. Younger knee jerk reactionary militarists, regional politicians, and EU leaning reformers increasingly find themselves completely without an outlet for expression.

15) Increasing physiological and psychological suffering in the land of plentiful natural resources. Insufficient provision of livable shelter due to structural inefficiencies of the economic and political system. Collapsing infrastructure that is decades behind the most developed countries on the planet (and often even behind developing nations) and that is not designed to meet the demand placed on it.

16) Serious and irreversible budgetary gaps between collected money to fund the functioning of the country and the money needed. Irreversibly large debt from military commitments and ideologically based management of society.

17) Restlessness in the satellite countries, desire of military allies to choose their own developmental path, and Washington DC's decreasing international credibility.

18) Inability of the top leadership to integrate the diverse ethnic groups of the Federal Union. As Emmanuel Todd (who predicted collapse of the Soviet union accurately) has pointed out, the child mortality of blacks has actually risen while the white child mortality declined. Demonstrative lack of national ethnic consolidation and thus lack of emergence of a unitary American nationality. Ethnic and regional groups still looking out for themselves rather than the whole of society.

19) Slow trickle of educated elites out of United States to countries where they can get better opportunities to materially expand.

20) Militarization of police to keep social order. Blatant suppression of genuine reformist political candidates from having any airtime. Increase in power of the intelligence organs.

21) History of violent belligerence abroad as well as continuing abuses and occupations (Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia). Militarized, warlike, and often xenophobic mindset of the population that is more concerned about imperial glory than peace, development, and human rights. After WW2, United States actually killed a lot more foreign peoples directly and indirectly than Soviet Union (which was under siege for decades by NATO armor).

The list can seriously be expanded to have 40 items. The reader is free to think of other key things that caused the slow rot and inefficiencies in Soviet Union and find an American equivalent. In the end, the summary of the cause of decline can be that the contradictions in the social fabric of United States (ideological emphasis on equality even though there is horrid ever increasing inequality) combined with the decades of state propaganda to create a serious inability to adapt and cope with national problems.

All the problems that Obama is now facing Gorbachev has also faced. He is seen as not moving fast enough when it comes to reform or is seen as moving too fast. In the meantime, he is constrained by status quo entrenched political interests and elites in almost every major organizational hierarchy. Historically, this is a very dangerous political situation since major social discontent begins when things start to improve but aren't seen as improving fast enough (or there is a bit of a reversal). We've seen this in late 19th century China, in late 18th century France, and of course Soviet Union itself. It seems United States has only postponed serious economic difficulty due to the collapse of its rival and by flooding Eurasia with dollars in the 1990s.

Industries Dying in the United States

It is virtually in the news everywhere you look on television, in the newspapers, even on the radio. Some United States industries are becoming extinct. Companies that are in the industry business are seeing the affects of the economy. This is evident when viewing the gross domestic product. The labor force is shrinking.

Economics, being the study of goods and services: the study of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services has become a dreary outcome for those companies not being able to survive the economic downturn.

United States News

The foreign competition industries are far from becoming extinct. The labor force is growing overseas. Why is this? Foreign competitions dollar value is becoming stronger. The foreign industries are not having to deal with technology and rising costs that American industries are enduring.

The economically challenged United States industries include various companies. Some of the United States industries that are becoming extinct and economically challenged include the various manufacturing industries. Included in the dying industries are the textile production companies.
Some United States industries are trying to adapt and change to survive hard economic times. Some struggles the dying industries face are of great concern to many other industries that are indirectly affected. The industries dying in the United States are struggling with a decrease in number of employees. Along with this, the economy has more than contributed to weakened income sources and industry output.

More dying industries are popping up as the economy weakens. More companies will have to adapt and turn to more profitable forms of business or fold and go out business. The economic downturn is expected to continue to reveal economically challenged companies through the year 2011, perhaps longer.

Dying industries are prevalent however there are those that will rebound. Some companies will have to adapt to new industries if wanting to stay in business and others will simply rebound. There are always ups and downs in an economy. For some American companies they will not have to worry about going extinct. These industries include the housing markets. In past time, and history usually repeats itself, the housing and financial markets have declined from time to time then promptly rebounded. Some companies can depend on cyclical downturns and upturns and remain fairly stable economically.

No one can say with out any doubt exactly what types industries will simply go extinct. When companies are able to remain flexible, grow and change to new improving markets they can become stable once again, just in a new market or perhaps a slightly altered market. Some industries will survive by supplying in niche within their industry. Some will avoid an economic disaster altogether by cutting back as needed, then going forward again when the economy stabilizes.

Projections and analysis of dying industries can be tricky in an unstable economy. In manufacturing perhaps this outcome is not so difficult to predict even for the public, the consumer.

Dying industries can change to keep their bottom line economics in place. The dying industries can diversify or expand into new types and forms of products and or services. For example, look at how the telephone companies dealt with declining land line sales. The phone companies simply expanded into the current rising market of the wireless market. Another example, videos stores. Video stores have expanded into online web services. Some industries now start the hiring process online. Bowling alleys and kids entertainment industries have expanded into providing other goods, such as food and drinks, to keep their place of business open and financially stable and somewhat successful. Even newspaper industries have taken the paper copy and made it a virtual copy, subscriptions online, not losing sales just altering the means in which their projected cash flow flows into the company. Some industries will remain a dying breed and either relocate into a different market or close business altogether because of continuing revenue loss and the high costs of maintaining a business. The industries that keep up with the changing times will survive and perhaps even thrive more when the economy stabilizes once again.

Natural Gas to Dominate Energy Market in United States?

It looks like all of the sudden natural gas has become one of the hottest energy topics in United States and all of the sudden almost all major energy analysts believe that natural gas will become game changer that could even slow down the future development of renewable energy technologies.

We are talking here about currently one of the cheapest energy options, and its low prices will very likely remain low in years to come, mostly because of the significant technological improvement, with the most noticeable being of course the shale gas extraction.

United States News

In light of all this, even US president Obama recently talked about this energy source as one of the obvious energy solutions for United States. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, accounting for significantly less carbon emissions compared to coal, some environmentalists would say the least evil of the fossil fuel triumvirate. This is why many energy experts talk about it as clean energy source though this is not the case because despite emitting significantly less greenhouse gases compared to coal, it can still end up as the major contributor to climate change and global warming.

Natural gas is primarily used for heating, and then for electricity generation. Lately there has been also talk about the natural gas powered vehicles, and we'll soon see whether this market will become success in years to come. In any case, it looks like this segment of energy market is living its Renaissance in United States, and by the current looks of it, this positive trend will not end any time soon.

Hopefully, this situation will not slow down the development of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal.

Egyptian Protests and United States

In June of 2009, I hypothesized that Obama's speech at Cairo university was an opening shot towards an effort to destabilize the Middle East. Such a move would serve not only to deny the area to Chinese and Russians as US turns inward and spends next 10-20 years economically reorganizing (harder for influence of major players to expand into a region engulfed by chaos) but it would potentially allow such reorganization. That is of course due to chaos supposedly bolstering the image of US as a fortress of investment safety via propping up the worth of US bonds and the dominance of the dollar as reserve currency. In theory, this in turn would allow continuation of funding for US dominated imperial framework. When you owe money in a reserve currency that you print and have the muscle to wage inflationary currency wars, such an insane strategy may even appear sensible at first glance.

Since the Cairo speech, US has also tried to destabilize the Eurozone via informational warfare and by using its best tools for such tasks, the credit rating agency attack dogs. Obviously there is no point in creating chaos along swaths of the globe if capital moves to competing areas of perceived safety. It is no surprise that as thousands of people went into the streets of Cairo, Standard & Poor's downgraded Japan's credit rating from AA to AA-. Today, 01/28/11, we saw a typical reaction of the dollar and US treasuries gaining as investors moved out of a relatively strong regional stock market in Egypt (that sparked sell offs in stock markets around the world) and into US treasuries. The biggest mouthpiece of the American oligarchy, the New York Times, had the timing to chip in about the Eurozone not being a good place to move one's money. American elites saw how the stock market implosions around the world in 2008 had fed the US bond market. Considering the desperate measures of quantitative easing and the federal reserve now being the biggest buyer of US debt, nothing is off the table to allow debt based funding to continue a while longer.

United States News

However, there are signs that US is not getting the timing right with its full spectrum chaos stirring. At the same time as the Tunisian revolt occurred (its people greatly helped and inspired by a wiki "leak" of US being against the former Tunisian dictator), the Euro was fighting off an incredible amount of concentrated short positions against it. Those shorting it lost and had to buy back the Euro making it rise against the dollar even quicker just as Egyptians were catching the Tunisian fever. Therefore, today's violence on the streets of Egypt (with corresponding pressure on Mubarak by the White House) occurred when not all of dollar's competitors were suppressed.

Interestingly enough, throughout January, gold and silver backed ETFs experienced a massive sell off (even as physical demand remained at an all time high) thus driving down the price of precious metals in a way that couldn't be done by shorting any longer. It is possible that even with the history of major financial structures shorting and thus suppressing the price of precious metals, the ETF sell off was just innocently due to paper holders moving into physical. Having said that, the timing is very suspicious for dollar dominated Wall Street players to be dumping gold/silver backed paper and lowering the market price just as the euro and 2 fire starter nations were being pressured as well.

Egyptian unrest was a mixed bag with dollar edging higher but gold/silver and other commodities like oil spiking up even faster. Since buying commodities currently works as a de facto bet against the future of the dollar, Washington seems to have lost with both the timing (Euro not being down and out as Cairo was burning) and commodities continuing to be seen as competitors to the dollar as a safety destination.

It is rather hilarious how smug the US political and financial class is, thinking that they can stir social unrest abroad and be immune from it at home. Gorbachev also actually seemed to have thought that he'd manage to remain in control if hardliners in satellite nations were overthrown and perestroika minded leaderships took over in their place. The sheer pathological arrogance and hypocrisy of the Obama administration (note how protesters were dispelled near G20 meeting in Pittsburgh) has no limits. Egyptians and Tunisians are protesting the same exact things that Americans are suffering from. There is little guarantee that in the future, Tunis or Cairo will not dump the dollar completely and move into the orbit of Berlin, Moscow, and Beijing.

The good news is that China and Russia are now acting as stabilizers and firemen. Throughout 2010, every time the US based credit rating agencies attacked the vulnerable Euro states, China seemed to step in and help Europe out. They invested heavily in Greece and recently began to launder their dollars by buying Spanish debt. People's Daily, the official mouthpiece of Chinese communist party, kept reaffirming the importance and health of the E.U. We also had a tit for tat move of a Chinese credit rating agency downgrading US credit rating in November, claiming 'that the U.S. government's solvency is "on the brink of collapse"'. Additionally, Russian Federation's prime minister Putin went as far as saying Russia may adopt the euro in the future.

Next few weeks will definitely be interesting. US propaganda organs are now saturating with Egypt coverage. Maybe they can attach some spiffy color to the unrest as well.

Should States Pull the Plug on Energy Deregulation?

The recent debacles related to electricity and energy that California and other states have experienced in recent years, a lot of detractors have voiced out their concerns about the effectiveness of energy deregulation. Many legislators from various states have even called the program a failure, making many states rethink their stand on whether to push through with deregulation, while other remain in a wait and see mode.

Many pointed out that energy deregulation was not successful in lowering down electricity rates, while others argued that reliable electricity infrastructures failed to materialize in their states. Legislators in these states are voicing out their views that the government takes back control of the market, and contemplating in giving back monopolies their previous role of solely providing electricity generation and distribution facilities.

United States News

Even in the state of Texas, which is at the forefront of the program with a deregulated Texas electricity market, consumers are paying more now than they used to at prices that are less than the national average. But those in the know are aware that the increase in prices should not be attributed to the implementation of energy deregulation but on other external factors as well. In fact, the state has gained much more from the Texas electricity deregulated market, with consumers doing well despite the volatile situation of the energy market.

Energy Deregulation in Texas

The deregulation of Texas electricity has given residents and enterprises the power to select their retail electric providers. The original goal for the state was not only to gain cutbacks in the Texas electricity monthly rates but to open an energy market where the money, creativity and competition freely flow for the benefit of the state and its constituents - and that's what happened in Texas. Texas energy deregulation have triggered an influx of investors that poured in over billion to fund the building of new power plants in the state which is considered one of the largest consumer of electricity in the nation. The result was six times more capacity for electricity generation in the state than it ever did during the 1990s.

Money and investments does not flow like that in a regulated or monopoly-controlled energy market. On top of that, the deregulated Texas electricity market offered great opportunities for more investors to come in, plus giving entrepreneurs and small business owners in the state new opportunities for earning money through the Texas electric retail market. Energy deregulation also paved the way for the development of more efficient and renewable energy, giving one step further in finally developing really cheap electricity for everyone to enjoy. Texas is the nationwide leader for wind energy with more than 2,000 wind turbines generating 9,000 MW of Texas electricity. Production continues to grow as the cost decreases with the development of more efficient wind turbine technology.

Solar energy development has also started to take shape, which could generate 123,000 new jobs in the state as the state heads toward solar power panel manufacturing and installation more aggressively. This development is expected to generate at least 1000 MW of Texas electricity by the year 2015, and jump up to 5,000 MW by 2025.

Could all these have occurred in a regulated or monopolized Texas electric market? The plain answer is definitely no and the more than 5.2 million Texas households and the scores of businesses using competitive energy attest to this. Other states should follow and benchmark the Texas example and finally gain success in their energy deregulation programs as they should have done so right from the very beginning.

Should States Pull the Plug on Energy Deregulation?

Are China and the United States at War?

Are China and the United States at War? Not physical soldier vs soldier, but I'm talking about economic war. The Google ordeal with China seemed pretty much clear that China has declared war on the United States. But there have been other signs for awhile like the Cyber attack that took out the Pentagon for a little while. China doesn't have the same regulations that the States and other Capitalist countries have, which has helped contribute to China having the fastest growing economy in the world. One has to guess when the bubble does burst, how bad it could really be for the Chinese.

America has been the flag ship for Capitalism since the World Wars. Now it seems the tables are turning. In some peoples eyes that table has completely turned over upside down for the US. One of the disadvantage for the United States is the global economy. It seems like every country is trying to get a piece of China's hot economy, therefore pretty much kissing up to whatever the Chinese want. If you look at the back of any toy, clothing, etc.. there is almost always a 'made in China' stamped on the back of it. The United States has been very accommodating to China but that doesn't seem to matter. It seems that China wants not to be the U.S. of the East, but in the same token want to have a economic war with the U.S. Make up your mind: friend or foe.

Top Amusement Parks In The United States

Who doesn't like going to amusement parks? I mean, really, the word amusement is in the name! I understand some people don't like roller coasters, or get motion sick, but there are other things to do at these parks. Many parks have shows to go see, shopping, then of course, even if you don't like going on roller coasters, you can see your friends and families pictures that were taken on the roller coaster. There are many amusement and theme parks in the US but some are cream of the crop and will make you scream, out of excitement of course.

Cedar Point amusement park has made it to the top of our list. Sandusky, Ohio is home to Cedar Point amusement park with 75 different rides and attractions; it has been dubbed "The Roller Coaster Capital of the World." Cedar Point also has one of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in the world, Thrill Dragster. Thrill Dragster goes to an acceleration of 120 mph in 3.8 seconds, it goes up at a 90-degree incline to the top of the 420-foot hill, and then as it descends the track twists 270 degrees before leveling out and being stopped by magnetic brakes.

United States News

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is next in line for the top amusement parks in the United States. What's great about this park is that it is open year round and has four theme parks of its own, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios, and Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Throughout the year they have different events at their parks, they are all kid friendly, and some are for ticket holders only, such as Mickey Mouse's Not So Scary Halloween Party, and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, Texas, gets the third spot in our list. Schlitterbahn is a water park that has over 40 rides and attractions to keep you nice and cool in the Texas summer heat. The water park, sadly, is only open during the summer. It normally opens around the end of April, and closes its doors in September. The park is family friendly of course, so if you find yourself in the Texas Heat, head on down to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, Texas.

King's Island in Manson, Ohio and is home to the Beast, the longest, 7,400 feet long, roller coaster in the world. The park has over 80 rides and stretches across 364 acres. King's Island is open seasonally from late May to September. The theme park also has a water park, and is family friendly. The park opens its gates yearly to over 3 million guests.

So if you are a thrill seeker, like water parks, and want to scream going at amazing speeds, then you might want to visit one or all of these water parks. You can get season passes for most of these theme parks, and if you are planning a trip to one of these parks, you may want to get traveler's insurance for all your travel needs.

Dream Act 2010 - Undocumented Students in the United States

With elections in November and the introduction of SB1070 in Arizona, the issue of undocumented immigrants in the United States has once again become a topic of great debate. Many of the problems the United States faces today are blamed on undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, it is undocumented students who receive the harshest punishment. Many immigrant children are brought to the United States undocumented by their parents at a very young age and have no say in their parents' decision. They are raised here their entire lives and know no other home. Like their fellow classmates, many excel in school with high GPAs, are talented athletes, and participate in school clubs, activities, and community service. However, despite all their achievements, as soon as they graduate high school they are left with an uncertain future, while their classmates go on to college or enter the work force. Undocumented students' dreams of becoming lawyers, doctors, politicians, engineers, architects, scientists, and more are all shattered because they lack a piece of paper that displays their legal status.

Some may say, "Why does it matter? They don't pay taxes, they don't contribute, they're criminals." Statements like this are undeniably FALSE. Not only do undocumented immigrants make purchases that aid the flow of the economy, they also pay sales, property, and income taxes, and contribute billion to Social Security and 1.5 billion to Medicare, but receive none of the benefits despite paying ,000 more per capita than what they use in government services (truthout.org). If undocumented families are paying taxes and doing what they can to do things the right way, why should the students be denied the opportunity to continue their education and further contribute to the country they call home?

United States News

Currently, undocumented students are in an extremely difficult situation because they must either remain in the United States undocumented where there is very little chance for them to receive a higher education or high-paying jobs, or they must return to a nation that is foreign to them, which often offers them no chance to advance. Although comprehensive immigration reform is far off, there is still a glimmer of hope. A bill known as the DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) act would allow undocumented students who graduated from U.S. high schools, entered the country before the age of sixteen, and have good moral character to obtain legal status in the United States while pursuing a degree in higher education or serving in the military. Since its introduction in 2001 the bill has slowly begun to gain support, but has yet to be approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Overall the bill would not only help undocumented students, but the United States as a whole. Of course the students benefit because they would be able to pursue their dreams, but the country would benefit through an improvement in the economy as students would be more willing to invest and high school drop out and crime rates would decrease because the students would have a promising future ahead of them. Why not give these students a chance?

Recession Proof States

Though some states were literally on the verge of bankruptcy during the recession, there were others that were able to thrive during this time of economic uncertainty. Lets Take Oklahoma for example. It has one of the country's strongest housing markets and employment actually fell in this state while rising in others. With solid growth in 3 key areas, agriculture, manufacturing and energy, Oklahoma City was one of the largest metropolitan areas that were able to ride out the recession.

Now let's look at Texas. Six cities in the state of Texas had solid employment figures. Those cities include Austin, the Dallas Fort Worth area, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston and McAllen. Austin's unemployment dropped from 3.8% to 3.6% while San Antonio's went from 4.3% to 4%. So while the rest of the country was experiencing a rise in unemployment, these cities managed to decrease the level of unemployment. These cities also have low home prices which make them more affordable to the majority of the population.

United States News

North Carolina also had a few cities that were able to stay afloat during the economic crisis. Those cities include Charlotte, Gastonia and Concord. Though Charlotte had a rise in unemployment, the economy as a whole still stayed very strong. Home prices grew and industries such as hospitality, transportation and health kept the economy moving.

Last but not least let's talk about Washington. Seattle in particular is home of some of the biggest companies in America. They include Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks and Costco just to name a few. This has helped unemployment to fall from 4.5% to 4.3%. Even better is the fact that home prices are very affordable in the area. Of the top metropolitan areas in the United States, Seattle had the strongest growth in manufacturing.

These are just a few of the states that have been able to stay strong while the economy was struggling. And truthfully, there are many more. So in essence, things might not be as bad as the news would have you to believe.

How to Immigrate Your Spouse to the United States

An Immigrant also known as a "lawful permanent resident" is a person whom was born in a country other than the one that they are trying to immigrate to who has been given the right to live and work permanently in that country. There are many hoops to jump through if you are a American citizen and you would like your spouse to become a lawful permanent resident.

It can be a very trying time being away from your spouse while they are trying to immigrate to the United States. If you have the money it is always nice to hire a knowledgeable immigration lawyer who knows the process well. The services of a person like this can be invaluable to you. The process of immigrating can be very complicated and time consuming if you do not know what you are doing or have some one on the payroll who knows what they are doing. If you are planning on completing the process of immigrating your spouse on your own here is a brief overview of the requirements and the process for spousal immigration.

United States News

To be eligible for immigrating your spouse to the United States of America you must be a US citizen yourself. Not only must you be a citizen but you must also be able to support your spouse or you spouse and children at or above 125% of the poverty level.

If your family lives in the United State like your Mother, Father or Brother and they are petitioning to have you immigrated to the united states you do not need to fill out a separate petition for your spouse or children.

Also if you were married before you were naturalized as US citizen you may not have to petition for a second immigration. Your wife may receive an immigrant visa number almost immediately.

In order to complete the immigration process for your spouse here are the main steps you must follow. You, a family member or an employer must complete an immigration petition and have it approved by the (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) USCIS for immigration and usually have it filed by an employer or relative who is in the United States. The US immigration department must give you a immigration visa number. You must receive a number even if you already live in the United States. If you do already live in the United States then your process is slightly different and you must apply to adjust your immigration status to permanent resident status.

That's all there is to it. You really just need to know all of the correct forms to fill out and all the right places to send them too and you are on your way. Just stick to the process and get it moving right away. The longer you wait to get started the longer it will be until you see your wife and family. I wish you luck on your endeavor.

United States Army Rangers

Army Rangers are an elite group within the U.S. Army. The first Ranger company was commissioned in 1676 and they fought in the French and Indian wars, the American Revolution, War of 1812, and the American Civil war but it was at the start of World War II that this elite fighting force was officially formed by order of General George C. Marshall.

Consisting of 6 Battalions they have been deployed in the Korean war, and wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Their mission in these wars were to do highly dangerous reconnaissance deep within enemy territories, striking targets behind enemy lines. They were also tasked with gathering intelligence, directing air strikes, recovering captured American and other allied prisoners of war, and other classified military operations.

United States News

There are 3 distinct phases of training for the Rangers. Located at Fort Benning in Georgia the United States Army Ranger Training School is a 61 day leadership course developed for small unit tactical missions. It is here where the "Benning Phase" woodland terrain tactics is taught. This is the basis of all their training that includes physical fitness, prowess and small unit tactical planning. The "Mountain Phase "training takes place at Camp Merrill near Dahlonega, Georgia. It is here that they are taught military mountaineering deploying techniques for combat in the mountains. Other tactical methods are taught in Florida at Camp Rudder and Elgin Air Force Base. Their training in Florida consists of intensely progressive skills in fighting and surviving in Swamp and rain forest environments. Due to Combat Exclusion Laws women are not allowed to apply or participate in Ranger training.

The Rangers have played a major role in the War on Terror. They were among the first elite forces to land on Afghanistan soil on October 2001, the start of Operation Enduring Freedom and were an integral part of the successful overthrow of the Taliban. In 2003 the Rangers were among the first sent in the Iraq going up against Iraq's elite Republican Guard units which they were overwhelmingly successful in defeating. The Rangers were also instrumental in the rescue of PFC Jessica Lynch.

Celebrate these brave soldiers of the Army Rangers and all the brave men and women who serve in all our military branches, honor all the heroes of our armed forces. If you know anyone that is serving or has served our country during war or is a member of the armed forces presently show your appreciation for their devotion, their steadfast to stand with their country in defending its freedoms. What You Need to Know About Cremation in the United States

Though cremation has been practiced for many centuries and in many cultures, it hasn't been until recently that cremation has become a more acceptable choice in the United States. However, it is on the rise as an end-of-life option. Some estimates note that approximately 25% of deceased bodies are cremated in the United States.

Acceptance of Cremation in the U.S.

United States News

For a long time, cremation was never considered an acceptable choice in Christian and Jewish religions-traditions that dominate the U.S. religious landscape. However, in the last several decades especially, cremation is seen as an acceptable practice within these religions. Cremation is also seen as an eco-friendly option that lightens the carbon footprint compared to traditional burial. For these reasons, it is increasingly accepted in the U.S.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

This governmental agency was established to protect consumers. And because the funeral-and cremation-industry is meant to make money, this sector also falls subject to the laws and regulations of the FTC. The FTC has established a regulation called the Funeral Rule, which protects consumers from fraudulent or unfair practices of those in the funeral industry. The FTC's website is a great resource for plain-language information about cremation rights under the Funeral Rule.

Cremation Societies

Cremation societies, like the Internet Cremation Society and the Cremation Society of North America, are clearinghouses of cremation information. They are meant to give reliable information to consumers. Although cremation societies aren't exclusive to the U.S., it's easy to find a society near you if you live in the United States. Typically for-profit businesses, these societies charge a small fee for membership, and in return provide quality information and reduced pricing for cremation services.

Transporting Cremated Remains

It's possible to transport cremated remains within and across state lines. While it's advisable to check local state laws where the remains will be transported, the general rule of thumb is that remains can be transported via the U.S. Postal Service or even on a plane. Do a little research about how to transport remains before actually transporting them, to ensure you're in compliance with local laws. Though it seems hard to believe, there are many unclaimed remains. The good news is, many funeral homes will actually keep those remains, with the hope that they may one day be claimed.

Vitamin Deficiency Epidemic in the United States

In the 21st century, in one of the most developed nations in the world, we have a vitamin deficiency of epidemic proportions. How is this possible, you may ask. We are extremely well fed, many of us take multi-vitamins, we drink our milk and eat our vegetables (most of the time). Furthermore, the US government has recommended daily allowances for vitamins that many of us try to get every day. How could we possibly be deficient in a vitamin?

Despite the efforts of the government and food science industries to make sure we have plenty of everything, studies show that 40-60% of the entire US population is deficient in vitamin D.

United States News

Historically, vitamin D deficiency resulted in rickets. Scientists determined the minimum amount of vitamin D and the government set the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Vitamin D was added to milk so the average child drinking the amount of milk recommended by the average pediatrician was guaranteed to get enough of the vitamin to prevent rickets, and we all were to live happily ever after.

It turns out Vitamin D is a critical nutrient for preventive maintenance of all of our body tissues, and recent research has shown the amount needed is far higher than the current US RDA.** Allowing your body to be deficient in vitamin D is like never changing the oil in your car. It runs just fine for a while, and then things simply begin to break down. Research has linked low levels of vitamin D to colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, type I and II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, melanoma, cardiovascular diseases (including heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure), periodontal disease, all autoimmune disorders, pre-eclampsia, difficult birthing, autism, and other diseases.** Let's be clear: low vitamin D does not CAUSE these diseases, but studies overwhelmingly show that people with these diseases have low serum (blood) levels of vitamin D, and that when the vitamin D level is brought into a normal range the prognosis is often 50% (or more) better than when the vitamin D level remains low.

How did we get so deficient? There are few dietary sources of vitamin D, including cod liver oil, egg yolks, butter, liver, oily fish, some fortified breakfast cereals, and milk. We tend to avoid strongly-flavored fishy foods in this culture, and we tend to minimize consumption of eggs and butter to lower our cholesterol. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin from cholesterol, and requires Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation for its synthesis. With the increased use of high SPF sunscreens (which completely block UVB radiation) and the increased use of cholesterol-lowering medication, we have severely limited our ability to manufacture vitamin D. Even without sunscreen, most of the US is far enough north of the equator that we receive limited amounts of UVB during most of the year. It is virtually impossible to get enough UVB to make vitamin D during the winter if you are north of the 35th parallel (think Atlanta or San Diego).

The US RDA for vitamin D is 400IU/day. Remember, the RDA for any nutrient is the MINIMUM amount required to prevent known deficiency disease, NOT the optimal amount needed for health.  For years, the only known vitamin D deficiency disease has been rickets, and this amount of vitamin D is sufficient to prevent rickets.  However, the latest research shows that for the disease prevention effect of vitamin D to be present, the blood level needs to be in the 60-80ng/ml range, more than double the current low end of the "normal" laboratory range for this nutrient.** To keep your blood vitamin D at this level requires 2000-2400IU/day from all sources for adults, 2000IU/day for children under 12, and 1000-1800IU/day for infants less than 1 year.

Vitamin D is fat soluble, so can't you get too much of it? The answer is yes, but you need a lot. Studies have demonstrated no toxicity with supplementation of vitamin D at levels as high as 20,000IU per day, so the levels recommended are well below the toxic dose for this vitamin.**

So, how do you get 2000IU of vitamin D per day? Most milk in the US has vitamin D added to it, so if you drink milk you are getting some vitamin D. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on the arms and legs during the peak hours for UVB radiation (10am-2pm), without sunscreen, allows your body to make about half the vitamin D it needs. However, if you live north of the 35th parallel you will be unable to get enough UVB exposure to make enough vitamin D during much of the year. The good news is that vitamin D supplements exist and are relatively inexpensive. I recommend starting with 1000IU per day in a supplement for most people. If you don't drink milk and rarely get out in the sun, 2000-2500IU per day would be appropriate. Therapeutic doses can be much higher, and require periodic monitoring of your blood levels to make sure you don't overdose.

It is easy to test for vitamin D deficiency with a simple blood test which can be ordered by most health care providers. You can also be tested through D Action (unless you live in the State of NY!), an advocacy group with the goal of eliminating vitamin D deficiency in the world. You can sign up to participate in the D Action research project at http://www.grassrootshealth.org. and completion of a survey provides you with a vitamin D test, materials to send the test for processing, and a copy of the results.

United States Welfare System - A History: Part 2

The Great Depression in the 1930's brought about the need for the creation of a national welfare system in the United States. In part 1 of this 2 part series, we covered the birth of this welfare system into World War II. In this, part, 2 we will follow that history into the present-day. For the most part, the welfare system grew slowly but steadily during the 40's and 50's in financial aid, but there was little in the way of real change of its basic structure.

All of that changed when John F. Kennedy assumed office in 1960. JFK intended to wage a "War on Poverty" by training Americans and putting them to work by creating educational, functional programs such as the Job Corps. After JFK's assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson carried the mantle in his place. In 1965, Medicaid and Medicare were established to provide medical assistance for the elderly and disabled and those on welfare. This change meant that 1 out of every 4 Americans received some form of federal assistance.

United States News

Nixon aimed higher, looking to establish the Family Assistance Plan to guarantee a minimum income to all families in 1972, though SSI (Supplemental Social Income) was passed, establishing a base income for the disabled. Welfare rights were expanded and held up by the Supreme Court. It was to help support minorities and women that were being unfairly denied benefits in the segregated Deep South.

By the mid 1970's, another financial crisis assaulted the United States. Unemployment soared. Energy prices rose, and inflation came into being. The requirement that single women without the presence of a father in the home were the only ones who could qualify for welfare was lifted. The welfare system and those aided by its benefits grew substantially. By 1980, Ronald Reagan and the conservatives took power because many Americans believed that the welfare system had become swollen. In the mid 80's, unemployment insurance decreased nearly 7%, and the welfare system lost much of its federal subsidy.

In the 90's, the welfare battle continued. Bill Clinton promised to end welfare, though he attempted to launch a sweeping federal healthcare system, while the Republicans vowed welfare reform, led by Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich who stated that the Congress would: "replace the welfare state with the opportunity society."

This led to the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act in 1996. Essentially the Act replaced open-ended federal assistance with TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), setting a maximum amount that the federal government would set aside to assist states with in regards to needy families being aided by the welfare system. This Act put much of the responsibility for welfare back on the states, off of the federal government. The thought was that no one is entitled to assistance and that the welfare system had created a welfare mentality. States were urged to train people and reduce their welfare budget, as well. This put many people back into the workforce, but meant they had to take jobs that paid them an income that provided for a life below the federal poverty line. By 1999, 2.2 million families or single parents were receiving welfare assistance. That was 2 million fewer families or single parents than received such aid in 1994.

The economy boomed in the 90's, but in October of 2008, the United States and the world faced a crushing economic crisis, the largest since the Great Depression of the 1930's. The housing bubble burst, unemployment percentages spiked to double-digit figures, banks and the stock market crashed, and America once again saw its unemployment ranks and welfare system swell. The end of the Bush Administration and the beginning of the Obama Administration have seen the federal government once again assist its citizens and its corporations with bail outs, increased welfare benefits, and unemployment duration extensions. The President Obama Administration had passed a national healthcare act at long last, known as Obamacare, though it is unclear if or when the Act will be instituted as a conservative backlash is still fighting the policy. Once again America is faced with financial crisis, and once again the federal government is expanding welfare assistance.

Opponents of a welfare state deride welfare as a bloated system that rewards the weak and robs the productive. They say that welfare burdens businesses. They also claim it causes taxes to increase, and inflation to rise, and that much is historically accurate. Proponents of a national welfare system argue that sometimes people need help, and some people simply cannot fend for themselves. That also is true. Nonetheless, somewhere there must exist a happy medium. Though no one can predict the future, history of the welfare system in this country is clear enough and easy enough to follow and one thing is for sure since its origination in 1935, it hasn't disappeared. It has swelled, and it has slimmed down over the past 7 decades, but it hasn't gone away, and history never lies. Perhaps it is time to stop bickering over whether or not we need a welfare system, it is here, and history says it isn't going anywhere. The advantage of history is that we can acquire knowledge from it. If we agree that welfare in some form is here and here to stay, maybe we can examine what has worked and what hasn't. We can also try to establish a better system that works for the most important institution, not the Congress, not the Presidency, not the Republicans or the Democrats, but the United States of America and its persevering citizens; who, through good times and bad have remained one nation, indivisible, seeking truth and justice for all.

Nursing Jobs Overseas Opportunities for Foreign Nurses in the United States

If you are looking to move your nursing abroad to the United States of America, then now is the time to do it. Hospitals in the USA are experiencing a staffing crisis, and this crisis is predicted to become worse over the next decade.

The nursing shortage in the USA is said to be caused by the many factors. On one hand there are many nurses reaching retirement age or choosing to retire early, and there simply aren't enough newly graduated nurses to fill all the gaps. And there is more strain being placed on existing medical staff because of the bubble of baby boomers reaching retirement.

United States News

This is great news for internationally educated nurses because they can now find nursing positions in US hospitals with ease. Hospital administrators are aggressively recruiting foreign nurses.

To nurse in the US, legally, there are many papers to fill out and different states have different rules. In order to qualify to register as a nurse in any state in the US you must meet the following criteria:

* undertaken post high school nursing education. This means you must have graduated high school and then gone on to do your nursing qualification afterwards.

* be a registered nurse or hold a license to nurse at home. This means that you are legally allowed to practice nursing in the country where you trained or the country where you currently live.

* have 1 year experience nursing in your specialty. If you aren't a specialist nurse in, for example, paediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, neo natal nursing, etc, your specialty would be as an adult nurse.

* be able to communicate clearly in English. If English is not your first language, you will be required to provide evidence of your ability to communicate to the required standard. This means that you'll have to take an English language test in speaking, reading, writing and listening.

Should you meet these 4 critical pre-application criteria, you can be assured that you're a good candidate for getting a nursing job in the United States.

There are three visa options for nurses who want to work in the US.

Firstly you can apply for the much coveted Green Card. In order to qualify for a Green Card, you must meet all the criteria above, and sit and pass the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination. To get this visa takes the longest of the three options, but it is the better option for you if you want to make a long term move to the US. It is possible, with a Green Card, to move your nursing career to the US permanently.

Secondly, you can apply for an H-1B visa. To qualify for an H-1B visa you need to have at least a Bachelor's degree in nursing. If you have a vocational nursing qualification you will not be granted this visa.

The last visa option for nurses is the H-1C visa. The US government issues 500 of these visas to healthcare workers each year.

If you thought that getting a nursing job in the USA was an impossible dream, you were mistaken. You need to get started on your applications right away because medical recruiters in the US are desperate to employ you right now!

The Top Five Special Forces Units in The United States Military and How They Keep You Safe

U.S. special forces teams are among the most elite, highly-trained military units in the world. You've heard of many of them-SEALS, Green Berets, and the Air Force Pararescue Unit, to name a few-but what do they really do, what kinds of tactical and survival gear do they use, and how do they, ultimately, keep you and the rest of us safe?

While there are plenty of other special-ops units within the military that are equally as important, let's take a look at five of the most widely known units.

United States News

The Navy Seals

The U.S. Navy's Sea, Air, and Land is one of the most elite and highly-trained units in the Navy, as well as one of the most recognizable. An organization with a storied past, the SEALS fall under the command of the Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC) and SOCOM.

Seals employ a mixture of extremely rigorous training, tactical and survival gear, and other field equipment to: fight terrorism, aid in foreign/domestic internal defense, provide reconnaissance intel, rescue and recover other military personnel and more. SEALS are assigned some of the most dangerous and specialized missions-missions that other military personnel would not normally be able to accomplish. Seals have served the U.S. in Panama, Iraq, Grenada, and Afghanistan.

The Green Berets: 'De oppresso liber'

The Green Berets, most recognizable by their military uniforms and trademark headgear, are special ops units within the U.S. Army Special Forces. They specialize mainly in special reconnaissance and surveillance(SR), direct action (DA; short-term action for special causes), counter terrorism, guerrilla warfare (or unconventional warfare: UW), and foreign defense.

Air Force Pararescue: 'That Others May Live'

The Air Force Pararescue unit (AFSC) is an elite organization within the U.S. Air Force that specializes in recovery and medical treatment of individuals in hostile or 'denied' areas. Members who opt to join this unit undergo extremely rigorous training-both physical and mental-over a period of one to two years. Up to 90 percent of those who join pararescue training classes never graduate. It's just that strenuous.

The U.S. Rangers: 'Sua Sponte'

Officially known as the 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Rangers is a rapidly-deployable infantry unit based out of Fort Benning, Georgia. Roles of Rangers in the military include air assault, infiltration and extraction, personnel and asset recovery, and aiding other special ops units.

The Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU)

DEVRU, otherwise known as SEAL Team Six, is the unofficial name of another elite forces unit in the Navy. Sometimes even more secret than other SEAL team themselves, DEVGRU is a Tier 1 (known as 'Black' ops) unit-TIER 1 operates at the highest level of military and is typically only accountable to the President of the United States or the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This fact alone means that this unit is not controlled by the usual military hierarchy; furthermore, the unit is so secret that even its official name is classified information.

Many of DEVRU's activities and responsibilities are highly classified and, therefore, unknown. One of its missions since its inception has been countering terrorism-using gear and methods not unlike that of other SEAL units.

Deportation From and Denial of Entry Into the United States

Every year, thousands of individuals come to the United States to work, to raise a family, or to experience a life that is better than the one they had before. Unfortunately, there are numerous ways to be deported or removed from the United States and even more ways to have entry to the United States denied.

Prior to the passage of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, "deportation" was the legal process of removing a foreign national already in the United States from the United States. "Exclusion" was the prevention of a foreign national from entering the United States. After the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, these two processes, exclusion and deportation, became "removal" proceedings. Anyone who is not a United States citizen is eligible to be put through removal proceedings.

United States News

There are two main types of permits to live in the United States, permanent resident and non-permanent resident. Permanent residents are issued Green Cards while non-permanent residents are given visas. Visas have more restrictions on them and expire after the purpose for which the individual needed the visa is no longer there.

Visa Holders: Denial of Entry

Visa holders should be prepared to prove whenever attempting to enter the United States that they are entering the United States for permissible reasons. Non-permanent residents need to be able to show that they intend to leave in accordance with the terms of their visa. This means that if an individual is granted a student visa, he or she should plan on leaving when their purpose is complete.

Even after being granted a visa, when an individual approaches the border, he or she can still be deemed "inadmissible". If this happens, any individual is expected to depart.

Visa Holders: Deportation

Non-permanent residents are most-frequently deported because they have entered the United States without the correct inspection documents or valid entry documents. The second most common reason for deportation of non-permanent residents involves individuals who entered the United States with a visa and then overstayed their visa.

Green Card Holders: Denial of Entry

Lawful permanent residents who have been outside of the United States for an extended period of time need to be prepared to show that they have intended to return to the United States since the second they left. If not, the green card holder may be denied entry.

Green Card Holders: Deportation

The most common reason for removal proceedings concerning individuals with permanent resident status is that they have committed a serious crime. Some people do not realize they are open to a removal proceeding until they apply for citizenship and a background check is performed as part of the naturalization process.

When an individual realizes they are open to a removal proceeding, withdrawing an application for citizenship will not prevent an individual from being deported if the person has already had removal proceedings started against him or her.

If you would like more information concerning deportation or immigration, please visit http://criminalandimmigrationlawyer.com/deportation.html. If you have any questions, their team will be more than happy to answer them for you.

Business Grants for Women In The United States

In addition to education grants, there is a wide range of business grants available to women. It is especially encouraged that women start their own career and own business so that they can stand on their own feet, without needing somebody to lean on. If you are a woman willing to start your own business but cannot feel courageous enough to take the first step for financial reasons, here is the good news for you: business grants can give you the push you need! However, before searching which grants are available, you should decide what you are willing to do. A woman with previously determined steps would attract many more grant providers. As soon as you have set out your plan, it is time to look around which grants are available for the sector you are planning to start a career in. At this point, there are many doors to be knocked. The alternatives range from starting a coffee bar to starting a home-based business; from day care centers to attending seminars for improving entrepreneurial skills. It is also possible to receive grants for jobs which have been started previously, but have gone into a crisis for a reason.

You may not get ,000 from the first foundation you apply to. There is no need for disappointment just because you get rejected from the top 3 institutions you were sure you would get funding from. First of all, do keep in mind that there are many different bodies that are distributing money to fund women. However, you should also be aware of the fact that you are not the only applicant. There are many other women who are seeking grants to start their businesses, and it should not be a surprise for you if you do not get "that" grant, because someone else will have got it. You should not give up and continue your research and application until you get what you want. However, it would not be very wise to look for large amounts of funding from a single organization, or two, unless they specify that they are allocating large amounts of money. The better solution is seeking to get smaller grants from various organizations. Once you have received a grant from one organization, others will be more willing to support you, as you are then seen as someone who deserves being supported, your reference being the other organizations to support you. Furthermore, your goals will start looking more realizable and it will be easier to get a grant as you will now need financial assistance for a project which has been initiated by previous help. Keeping these tips in mind, there is no need to remain as a desperate housewife.

More College Killings in the States

In one of the deadliest shootings in US history, a lone gunman shot and killed 32 people before killing himself. It is the worst bloodbath in a college or university in the United States. When I first saw the headlines, I felt total shock, and then almost immediately a sense and question mark of - what again?

Why is it that this kind of occurrence seems to be almost anticipated. Possibly this is because it has happened in the States before. On several occasions some mad shooter has entered a school and let loose. It was only recently that the Amish school that was most recently attacked, has been rebuilt and reopened to children.

United States News

The media attention has been huge. Prime Ministers and heads of state have indicated their condolences and regrets. And I agree with these, never one to belittle this kind of tragedy. But then, the next bit of news coming from Iraq is that 157 are confirmed dead in Baghdad, where a market was bombed. This bomb immediately torched market stalls and engulfed the market, vehicles and people. It is anticipated that the death toll will be much higher due to the large numbers of injured people.

I haven't seen the same media attention focused on this atrocity in Baghdad as has been on the college deaths. Why is it that 157 innocent civilian deaths, killed while shopping at a market, do not create the same media hype? Are the lives of 33 college students more important than 157 Kurdish and Shia people who happen to be shopping at the time in a market? Are their deaths not as wanton and senseless?

It seems to me that in the media and amongst politicians, deaths in Iraq are of no consequence anymore. They have become so common place that nobody blinks when outrageous numbers such as at the Baghdad market, are killed. But when a group of students in America get killed then it is beyond hysteria in the media.

Possibly those grieving people who have lost their young sons and daughters or knew them as friends or co-students, might just in their pain and suffering remember that Iraqi people feel the same when their loved ones are senselessly killed. There is no difference between a student being killed and a person at a market in Baghdad. If the world would actually understand this, this horrific senseless stupid war in Iraq would be stopped.

How Drug Trafficking Affects The United States And Its Youth

Today, drug trafficking is a scourge that is affecting practically all nations and their youth. The United States is no different. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), a survey conducted by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration) and the following startling statistics were revealed:

1. An estimated 14.8 million Americans currently use illicit drugs

United States News

2. An estimated 6.4 million Americans use cocaine, heroine, hallucinogens

Drug use and its consequences threaten and affect the nation and its people from every socio-economic background, geographic region, and people with any level of education. Increasing use of illegal drugs among the youth is quite alarming. Kids suffer from life-long dependency problems by consuming substances like heroine and cocaine. Early use of illicit drugs leads to unhealthy behavior. It also associates itself with unwanted pregnancy and premature sexual activity which results in exposure to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

The US suffers an annual loss of about 70 billion dollars due to drug-related illnesses, death, and drug related crimes.
