Vitamin Deficiency Epidemic in the United States

In the 21st century, in one of the most developed nations in the world, we have a vitamin deficiency of epidemic proportions. How is this possible, you may ask. We are extremely well fed, many of us take multi-vitamins, we drink our milk and eat our vegetables (most of the time). Furthermore, the US government has recommended daily allowances for vitamins that many of us try to get every day. How could we possibly be deficient in a vitamin?

Despite the efforts of the government and food science industries to make sure we have plenty of everything, studies show that 40-60% of the entire US population is deficient in vitamin D.

United States News

Historically, vitamin D deficiency resulted in rickets. Scientists determined the minimum amount of vitamin D and the government set the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Vitamin D was added to milk so the average child drinking the amount of milk recommended by the average pediatrician was guaranteed to get enough of the vitamin to prevent rickets, and we all were to live happily ever after.

It turns out Vitamin D is a critical nutrient for preventive maintenance of all of our body tissues, and recent research has shown the amount needed is far higher than the current US RDA.** Allowing your body to be deficient in vitamin D is like never changing the oil in your car. It runs just fine for a while, and then things simply begin to break down. Research has linked low levels of vitamin D to colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, type I and II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, melanoma, cardiovascular diseases (including heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure), periodontal disease, all autoimmune disorders, pre-eclampsia, difficult birthing, autism, and other diseases.** Let's be clear: low vitamin D does not CAUSE these diseases, but studies overwhelmingly show that people with these diseases have low serum (blood) levels of vitamin D, and that when the vitamin D level is brought into a normal range the prognosis is often 50% (or more) better than when the vitamin D level remains low.

How did we get so deficient? There are few dietary sources of vitamin D, including cod liver oil, egg yolks, butter, liver, oily fish, some fortified breakfast cereals, and milk. We tend to avoid strongly-flavored fishy foods in this culture, and we tend to minimize consumption of eggs and butter to lower our cholesterol. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin from cholesterol, and requires Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation for its synthesis. With the increased use of high SPF sunscreens (which completely block UVB radiation) and the increased use of cholesterol-lowering medication, we have severely limited our ability to manufacture vitamin D. Even without sunscreen, most of the US is far enough north of the equator that we receive limited amounts of UVB during most of the year. It is virtually impossible to get enough UVB to make vitamin D during the winter if you are north of the 35th parallel (think Atlanta or San Diego).

The US RDA for vitamin D is 400IU/day. Remember, the RDA for any nutrient is the MINIMUM amount required to prevent known deficiency disease, NOT the optimal amount needed for health.  For years, the only known vitamin D deficiency disease has been rickets, and this amount of vitamin D is sufficient to prevent rickets.  However, the latest research shows that for the disease prevention effect of vitamin D to be present, the blood level needs to be in the 60-80ng/ml range, more than double the current low end of the "normal" laboratory range for this nutrient.** To keep your blood vitamin D at this level requires 2000-2400IU/day from all sources for adults, 2000IU/day for children under 12, and 1000-1800IU/day for infants less than 1 year.

Vitamin D is fat soluble, so can't you get too much of it? The answer is yes, but you need a lot. Studies have demonstrated no toxicity with supplementation of vitamin D at levels as high as 20,000IU per day, so the levels recommended are well below the toxic dose for this vitamin.**

So, how do you get 2000IU of vitamin D per day? Most milk in the US has vitamin D added to it, so if you drink milk you are getting some vitamin D. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on the arms and legs during the peak hours for UVB radiation (10am-2pm), without sunscreen, allows your body to make about half the vitamin D it needs. However, if you live north of the 35th parallel you will be unable to get enough UVB exposure to make enough vitamin D during much of the year. The good news is that vitamin D supplements exist and are relatively inexpensive. I recommend starting with 1000IU per day in a supplement for most people. If you don't drink milk and rarely get out in the sun, 2000-2500IU per day would be appropriate. Therapeutic doses can be much higher, and require periodic monitoring of your blood levels to make sure you don't overdose.

It is easy to test for vitamin D deficiency with a simple blood test which can be ordered by most health care providers. You can also be tested through D Action (unless you live in the State of NY!), an advocacy group with the goal of eliminating vitamin D deficiency in the world. You can sign up to participate in the D Action research project at http://www.grassrootshealth.org. and completion of a survey provides you with a vitamin D test, materials to send the test for processing, and a copy of the results.

United States Welfare System - A History: Part 2

The Great Depression in the 1930's brought about the need for the creation of a national welfare system in the United States. In part 1 of this 2 part series, we covered the birth of this welfare system into World War II. In this, part, 2 we will follow that history into the present-day. For the most part, the welfare system grew slowly but steadily during the 40's and 50's in financial aid, but there was little in the way of real change of its basic structure.

All of that changed when John F. Kennedy assumed office in 1960. JFK intended to wage a "War on Poverty" by training Americans and putting them to work by creating educational, functional programs such as the Job Corps. After JFK's assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson carried the mantle in his place. In 1965, Medicaid and Medicare were established to provide medical assistance for the elderly and disabled and those on welfare. This change meant that 1 out of every 4 Americans received some form of federal assistance.

United States News

Nixon aimed higher, looking to establish the Family Assistance Plan to guarantee a minimum income to all families in 1972, though SSI (Supplemental Social Income) was passed, establishing a base income for the disabled. Welfare rights were expanded and held up by the Supreme Court. It was to help support minorities and women that were being unfairly denied benefits in the segregated Deep South.

By the mid 1970's, another financial crisis assaulted the United States. Unemployment soared. Energy prices rose, and inflation came into being. The requirement that single women without the presence of a father in the home were the only ones who could qualify for welfare was lifted. The welfare system and those aided by its benefits grew substantially. By 1980, Ronald Reagan and the conservatives took power because many Americans believed that the welfare system had become swollen. In the mid 80's, unemployment insurance decreased nearly 7%, and the welfare system lost much of its federal subsidy.

In the 90's, the welfare battle continued. Bill Clinton promised to end welfare, though he attempted to launch a sweeping federal healthcare system, while the Republicans vowed welfare reform, led by Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich who stated that the Congress would: "replace the welfare state with the opportunity society."

This led to the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act in 1996. Essentially the Act replaced open-ended federal assistance with TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), setting a maximum amount that the federal government would set aside to assist states with in regards to needy families being aided by the welfare system. This Act put much of the responsibility for welfare back on the states, off of the federal government. The thought was that no one is entitled to assistance and that the welfare system had created a welfare mentality. States were urged to train people and reduce their welfare budget, as well. This put many people back into the workforce, but meant they had to take jobs that paid them an income that provided for a life below the federal poverty line. By 1999, 2.2 million families or single parents were receiving welfare assistance. That was 2 million fewer families or single parents than received such aid in 1994.

The economy boomed in the 90's, but in October of 2008, the United States and the world faced a crushing economic crisis, the largest since the Great Depression of the 1930's. The housing bubble burst, unemployment percentages spiked to double-digit figures, banks and the stock market crashed, and America once again saw its unemployment ranks and welfare system swell. The end of the Bush Administration and the beginning of the Obama Administration have seen the federal government once again assist its citizens and its corporations with bail outs, increased welfare benefits, and unemployment duration extensions. The President Obama Administration had passed a national healthcare act at long last, known as Obamacare, though it is unclear if or when the Act will be instituted as a conservative backlash is still fighting the policy. Once again America is faced with financial crisis, and once again the federal government is expanding welfare assistance.

Opponents of a welfare state deride welfare as a bloated system that rewards the weak and robs the productive. They say that welfare burdens businesses. They also claim it causes taxes to increase, and inflation to rise, and that much is historically accurate. Proponents of a national welfare system argue that sometimes people need help, and some people simply cannot fend for themselves. That also is true. Nonetheless, somewhere there must exist a happy medium. Though no one can predict the future, history of the welfare system in this country is clear enough and easy enough to follow and one thing is for sure since its origination in 1935, it hasn't disappeared. It has swelled, and it has slimmed down over the past 7 decades, but it hasn't gone away, and history never lies. Perhaps it is time to stop bickering over whether or not we need a welfare system, it is here, and history says it isn't going anywhere. The advantage of history is that we can acquire knowledge from it. If we agree that welfare in some form is here and here to stay, maybe we can examine what has worked and what hasn't. We can also try to establish a better system that works for the most important institution, not the Congress, not the Presidency, not the Republicans or the Democrats, but the United States of America and its persevering citizens; who, through good times and bad have remained one nation, indivisible, seeking truth and justice for all.

Nursing Jobs Overseas Opportunities for Foreign Nurses in the United States

If you are looking to move your nursing abroad to the United States of America, then now is the time to do it. Hospitals in the USA are experiencing a staffing crisis, and this crisis is predicted to become worse over the next decade.

The nursing shortage in the USA is said to be caused by the many factors. On one hand there are many nurses reaching retirement age or choosing to retire early, and there simply aren't enough newly graduated nurses to fill all the gaps. And there is more strain being placed on existing medical staff because of the bubble of baby boomers reaching retirement.

United States News

This is great news for internationally educated nurses because they can now find nursing positions in US hospitals with ease. Hospital administrators are aggressively recruiting foreign nurses.

To nurse in the US, legally, there are many papers to fill out and different states have different rules. In order to qualify to register as a nurse in any state in the US you must meet the following criteria:

* undertaken post high school nursing education. This means you must have graduated high school and then gone on to do your nursing qualification afterwards.

* be a registered nurse or hold a license to nurse at home. This means that you are legally allowed to practice nursing in the country where you trained or the country where you currently live.

* have 1 year experience nursing in your specialty. If you aren't a specialist nurse in, for example, paediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, neo natal nursing, etc, your specialty would be as an adult nurse.

* be able to communicate clearly in English. If English is not your first language, you will be required to provide evidence of your ability to communicate to the required standard. This means that you'll have to take an English language test in speaking, reading, writing and listening.

Should you meet these 4 critical pre-application criteria, you can be assured that you're a good candidate for getting a nursing job in the United States.

There are three visa options for nurses who want to work in the US.

Firstly you can apply for the much coveted Green Card. In order to qualify for a Green Card, you must meet all the criteria above, and sit and pass the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination. To get this visa takes the longest of the three options, but it is the better option for you if you want to make a long term move to the US. It is possible, with a Green Card, to move your nursing career to the US permanently.

Secondly, you can apply for an H-1B visa. To qualify for an H-1B visa you need to have at least a Bachelor's degree in nursing. If you have a vocational nursing qualification you will not be granted this visa.

The last visa option for nurses is the H-1C visa. The US government issues 500 of these visas to healthcare workers each year.

If you thought that getting a nursing job in the USA was an impossible dream, you were mistaken. You need to get started on your applications right away because medical recruiters in the US are desperate to employ you right now!

The Top Five Special Forces Units in The United States Military and How They Keep You Safe

U.S. special forces teams are among the most elite, highly-trained military units in the world. You've heard of many of them-SEALS, Green Berets, and the Air Force Pararescue Unit, to name a few-but what do they really do, what kinds of tactical and survival gear do they use, and how do they, ultimately, keep you and the rest of us safe?

While there are plenty of other special-ops units within the military that are equally as important, let's take a look at five of the most widely known units.

United States News

The Navy Seals

The U.S. Navy's Sea, Air, and Land is one of the most elite and highly-trained units in the Navy, as well as one of the most recognizable. An organization with a storied past, the SEALS fall under the command of the Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC) and SOCOM.

Seals employ a mixture of extremely rigorous training, tactical and survival gear, and other field equipment to: fight terrorism, aid in foreign/domestic internal defense, provide reconnaissance intel, rescue and recover other military personnel and more. SEALS are assigned some of the most dangerous and specialized missions-missions that other military personnel would not normally be able to accomplish. Seals have served the U.S. in Panama, Iraq, Grenada, and Afghanistan.

The Green Berets: 'De oppresso liber'

The Green Berets, most recognizable by their military uniforms and trademark headgear, are special ops units within the U.S. Army Special Forces. They specialize mainly in special reconnaissance and surveillance(SR), direct action (DA; short-term action for special causes), counter terrorism, guerrilla warfare (or unconventional warfare: UW), and foreign defense.

Air Force Pararescue: 'That Others May Live'

The Air Force Pararescue unit (AFSC) is an elite organization within the U.S. Air Force that specializes in recovery and medical treatment of individuals in hostile or 'denied' areas. Members who opt to join this unit undergo extremely rigorous training-both physical and mental-over a period of one to two years. Up to 90 percent of those who join pararescue training classes never graduate. It's just that strenuous.

The U.S. Rangers: 'Sua Sponte'

Officially known as the 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Rangers is a rapidly-deployable infantry unit based out of Fort Benning, Georgia. Roles of Rangers in the military include air assault, infiltration and extraction, personnel and asset recovery, and aiding other special ops units.

The Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU)

DEVRU, otherwise known as SEAL Team Six, is the unofficial name of another elite forces unit in the Navy. Sometimes even more secret than other SEAL team themselves, DEVGRU is a Tier 1 (known as 'Black' ops) unit-TIER 1 operates at the highest level of military and is typically only accountable to the President of the United States or the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This fact alone means that this unit is not controlled by the usual military hierarchy; furthermore, the unit is so secret that even its official name is classified information.

Many of DEVRU's activities and responsibilities are highly classified and, therefore, unknown. One of its missions since its inception has been countering terrorism-using gear and methods not unlike that of other SEAL units.

Deportation From and Denial of Entry Into the United States

Every year, thousands of individuals come to the United States to work, to raise a family, or to experience a life that is better than the one they had before. Unfortunately, there are numerous ways to be deported or removed from the United States and even more ways to have entry to the United States denied.

Prior to the passage of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, "deportation" was the legal process of removing a foreign national already in the United States from the United States. "Exclusion" was the prevention of a foreign national from entering the United States. After the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, these two processes, exclusion and deportation, became "removal" proceedings. Anyone who is not a United States citizen is eligible to be put through removal proceedings.

United States News

There are two main types of permits to live in the United States, permanent resident and non-permanent resident. Permanent residents are issued Green Cards while non-permanent residents are given visas. Visas have more restrictions on them and expire after the purpose for which the individual needed the visa is no longer there.

Visa Holders: Denial of Entry

Visa holders should be prepared to prove whenever attempting to enter the United States that they are entering the United States for permissible reasons. Non-permanent residents need to be able to show that they intend to leave in accordance with the terms of their visa. This means that if an individual is granted a student visa, he or she should plan on leaving when their purpose is complete.

Even after being granted a visa, when an individual approaches the border, he or she can still be deemed "inadmissible". If this happens, any individual is expected to depart.

Visa Holders: Deportation

Non-permanent residents are most-frequently deported because they have entered the United States without the correct inspection documents or valid entry documents. The second most common reason for deportation of non-permanent residents involves individuals who entered the United States with a visa and then overstayed their visa.

Green Card Holders: Denial of Entry

Lawful permanent residents who have been outside of the United States for an extended period of time need to be prepared to show that they have intended to return to the United States since the second they left. If not, the green card holder may be denied entry.

Green Card Holders: Deportation

The most common reason for removal proceedings concerning individuals with permanent resident status is that they have committed a serious crime. Some people do not realize they are open to a removal proceeding until they apply for citizenship and a background check is performed as part of the naturalization process.

When an individual realizes they are open to a removal proceeding, withdrawing an application for citizenship will not prevent an individual from being deported if the person has already had removal proceedings started against him or her.

If you would like more information concerning deportation or immigration, please visit http://criminalandimmigrationlawyer.com/deportation.html. If you have any questions, their team will be more than happy to answer them for you.

The Rise of the United Nations - The Leopard With Dove's Wings

The Third Beast - The Leopard with Four Heads
As I have done with the other two beasts, the lion with eagle's wings and the bear with the three ribs in his mouth, let's assemble a complete image of the third beast, the leopard with the four heads and the four bird's wings. The first thing to notice is that this beast is the weakest of all the four beasts. The leopard is not as strong an animal as a lion or a bear and certainly weaker than the fourth beast that is "terrible" in appearance.

The leopard is also weak when you consider it has bird's wings unlike the first beast that had eagle's wings; the bird being a much weaker animal than an eagle. I believe the leopard is also symbolic of the multinational organization, the United Nations, embodied by the ram in Daniel's vision of the ram and the goat. I believe the four bird wings of the leopard are representative of all the countries in the world because the four wings represent the four directions (north, south, east and west).

United States News

This is also shown in the book of Daniel (Daniel 2:39): "And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth." The leopard, the kingdom of brass, has the unique attribute of "having rule over all the earth". The four heads of the leopard are also consistent with the four horns that arise from the ram after the "notable" horn is broken, the four nations that arise from their respective part of the world to rule the United Nations. The evidence that the leopard and consequently the United Nations are not powerful in and of themselves is that dominion is given to them (Daniel 7:6).

Remember that the leopard is also representative of the third kingdom mentioned in Nebuchadnezzar's vision of a statue, the kingdom of bronze that forms the waist and the legs of the statue. The bronze represents a military power that is an inferior in strength to the iron kingdom that represents the fourth kingdom.

The bronze that forms the waist and then the legs also represents the idea that the third kingdom will be unified in the beginning but later is will be separated into several parts. This is again consistent with the image of the ram having one horn and then having it broken and replaced by four horns that rise up later.

Business Grants for Women In The United States

In addition to education grants, there is a wide range of business grants available to women. It is especially encouraged that women start their own career and own business so that they can stand on their own feet, without needing somebody to lean on. If you are a woman willing to start your own business but cannot feel courageous enough to take the first step for financial reasons, here is the good news for you: business grants can give you the push you need! However, before searching which grants are available, you should decide what you are willing to do. A woman with previously determined steps would attract many more grant providers. As soon as you have set out your plan, it is time to look around which grants are available for the sector you are planning to start a career in. At this point, there are many doors to be knocked. The alternatives range from starting a coffee bar to starting a home-based business; from day care centers to attending seminars for improving entrepreneurial skills. It is also possible to receive grants for jobs which have been started previously, but have gone into a crisis for a reason.

You may not get ,000 from the first foundation you apply to. There is no need for disappointment just because you get rejected from the top 3 institutions you were sure you would get funding from. First of all, do keep in mind that there are many different bodies that are distributing money to fund women. However, you should also be aware of the fact that you are not the only applicant. There are many other women who are seeking grants to start their businesses, and it should not be a surprise for you if you do not get "that" grant, because someone else will have got it. You should not give up and continue your research and application until you get what you want. However, it would not be very wise to look for large amounts of funding from a single organization, or two, unless they specify that they are allocating large amounts of money. The better solution is seeking to get smaller grants from various organizations. Once you have received a grant from one organization, others will be more willing to support you, as you are then seen as someone who deserves being supported, your reference being the other organizations to support you. Furthermore, your goals will start looking more realizable and it will be easier to get a grant as you will now need financial assistance for a project which has been initiated by previous help. Keeping these tips in mind, there is no need to remain as a desperate housewife.

Economic Crisis Puts the Funeral Industry in a 'Grave' State!

The old cliché resonates "Nothing is certain but death and taxes" and I have heard many talk about the 'death' industry as a "recession-proof" business. Yet the Funeral Industry is now feeling its own pinch as the current troubling economic times continue.

This once very traditional industry has to move out of the dark ages and embrace modern technology if it is to succeed as "recession-proof"! An billion a year industry, with over 21, 000 Funeral Homes, employing some 105,000 people, divided between a couple of large corporations, small independent businesses and individual family-owned Funeral Homes. Many of the independent and family run Funeral Homes do not even consider a web site as a fundamental tool to market their services in today's modern 'online' world.

United States News

When money is tight, people look for options to save money, luxuries are reduced, and any extravagances are limited. In today's economic climate arranging a funeral, especially if it has come as an unexpected task, is treated much like any other expenditure.....and scaled down.

Reports from the industry suggest that more and more people are choosing cremation as a preferred alternative to a traditional burial. Why? Simply...the cost!! An average traditional burial costs between ,000 and ,000. The average basic cremation can cost from as little as 0. On average a family can save at least ,000 to ,000 by opting for a simple cremation. Some Funeral Homes are reporting cremation rates increasing by as much as 20 percent year-on-year. The Cremation Association of North America reports that the practice has been rising annually nationwide, with nearly 40 percent of all deaths in the United States expected to result in cremation by 2010. The No. 1 reason for this pattern, according to the association, is cost -- 30 percent of people surveyed said that cremation saves money.

Even those still choosing a more traditional funeral are opting for ways to save money on that expensive 'all costs' tab. Funeral Homes report that families are purchasing funeral items such as caskets and urns at a discount utilizing the Internet. The recession is hitting all areas of the Funeral Industry, but especially those 'extravagances' that cause a family to dig deeper into their coffers, but may seem superfluous to real necessity. Sympathy flowers sales are down, grave-markers and headstones are getting smaller and less ornate.

The price conscious public are now quite savvy that the Internet can afford them the luxury of comparing prices, products and services.....and all from the comfort of their home. An industry that typically avoided quoting prices is having to adapt to the demands of this modern consumer. And the Funeral Homes that will benefit from this market place are those that have not only embraced all that the Internet can offer in attracting them business; but also those that are choosing to be transparent in their pricing and offer the 'affordable' option. As with any industry if sales revenue falls then the volume of sales must increase.

Economic Crisis Puts the Funeral Industry in a 'Grave' State!

More College Killings in the States

In one of the deadliest shootings in US history, a lone gunman shot and killed 32 people before killing himself. It is the worst bloodbath in a college or university in the United States. When I first saw the headlines, I felt total shock, and then almost immediately a sense and question mark of - what again?

Why is it that this kind of occurrence seems to be almost anticipated. Possibly this is because it has happened in the States before. On several occasions some mad shooter has entered a school and let loose. It was only recently that the Amish school that was most recently attacked, has been rebuilt and reopened to children.

United States News

The media attention has been huge. Prime Ministers and heads of state have indicated their condolences and regrets. And I agree with these, never one to belittle this kind of tragedy. But then, the next bit of news coming from Iraq is that 157 are confirmed dead in Baghdad, where a market was bombed. This bomb immediately torched market stalls and engulfed the market, vehicles and people. It is anticipated that the death toll will be much higher due to the large numbers of injured people.

I haven't seen the same media attention focused on this atrocity in Baghdad as has been on the college deaths. Why is it that 157 innocent civilian deaths, killed while shopping at a market, do not create the same media hype? Are the lives of 33 college students more important than 157 Kurdish and Shia people who happen to be shopping at the time in a market? Are their deaths not as wanton and senseless?

It seems to me that in the media and amongst politicians, deaths in Iraq are of no consequence anymore. They have become so common place that nobody blinks when outrageous numbers such as at the Baghdad market, are killed. But when a group of students in America get killed then it is beyond hysteria in the media.

Possibly those grieving people who have lost their young sons and daughters or knew them as friends or co-students, might just in their pain and suffering remember that Iraqi people feel the same when their loved ones are senselessly killed. There is no difference between a student being killed and a person at a market in Baghdad. If the world would actually understand this, this horrific senseless stupid war in Iraq would be stopped.

How Drug Trafficking Affects The United States And Its Youth

Today, drug trafficking is a scourge that is affecting practically all nations and their youth. The United States is no different. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), a survey conducted by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration) and the following startling statistics were revealed:

1. An estimated 14.8 million Americans currently use illicit drugs

United States News

2. An estimated 6.4 million Americans use cocaine, heroine, hallucinogens

Drug use and its consequences threaten and affect the nation and its people from every socio-economic background, geographic region, and people with any level of education. Increasing use of illegal drugs among the youth is quite alarming. Kids suffer from life-long dependency problems by consuming substances like heroine and cocaine. Early use of illicit drugs leads to unhealthy behavior. It also associates itself with unwanted pregnancy and premature sexual activity which results in exposure to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

The US suffers an annual loss of about 70 billion dollars due to drug-related illnesses, death, and drug related crimes. Illicit drug users are unaware of the fact that drug abuse indirectly or directly affects their family, their neighborhood, their business, their education and their health adversely.

Harmful drugs consumed by pregnant women affect both the mother as well as the unborn child. Maternal drug abuse contributes to birth defects and infant mortality. According to a recent research, the use of drugs by a pregnant woman may result in poor development of the child after birth and they are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS.

It has been observed that teens consuming marijuana are most likely to consume cocaine in later years. The second commonly consumed drug after marijuana is a stimulant. Most 12th graders use LSD on a monthly basis. Using LSD stimulates the mind but can severely affect the nervous system. A teenager can risk his life by consuming drugs and is also more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases as well as AIDS.

With the rise in consumption of drugs, drug-related crimes are increasing steadily and thus leading to numerous drug related arrests either because of possession of drugs or thefts committed to fund the drug habit.

2011 Economic Forecast - Part 2: The United States (US)

2010 is finally history. The economic recovery, which officially began in 2009, was scarcely evident as the US economy muddled through 2010. It seemed that for every piece of good news, like the strong end to the 2010 Christmas shopping season, was countered by news of a setback, such as unemployment rates that unexpectedly returned to nearly 10% during the same period.

The government's stimulus efforts have run their course. The TARP program is officially over and tax credits for new home buyers have all expired. The economy now has to perform on its own without all that artificial stimulation.

United States News

The fed has reduced interest rates to historic lows to internally stimulate the economy. If interest rates were the cause of The Great Recession this action should have revved up the economy and put us back on track. With federal reserve interest rates at 0% the economy should be white-hot. However, high interest rates are not the problem, so lowering them did not spark an economic rebound. Here's why with my forecast for 2011:

Unemployment Will Probably Stay Stuck Near 10%

The dirty little secret behind this statistic is that the 10% figure represents only those who currently have no earned income. Those who are working one or more part-time jobs because they can't find a full-time work, are underemployed in their field, or who are laboring out-of-bounds of their education or training are considered by the government to be employed. When this expanded population is taken into account, the actual unemployment/underemployment statistic is most likely double the official figure.

Unfortunately, there are now multiple barriers to lowering our now chronically high unemployment level. Some of the most important are:

The huge oversupply of foreclosed and unsold homes - The reasoning here is straightforward: there is no need for new construction in a saturated market, which means no construction jobs. Jobs in support industries that supply new home construction goods and services will obviously also be affected. More on this topic below. Continued restraint in consumer spending - more on this topic below. Major (and many smaller) corporations continue to outsource overseas everything from manufacturing to admin support - much is made of sending low skill or semi-skilled manufacturing jobs overseas, while the US supposedly maintains its edge through high tech startups at home. The government likes to point to numerous high tech startup companies as proof this strategy is working.
Some entrepreneurs do successfully start corporations that may eventually employ 50 white collar workers. However, the product they create is outsourced to manufacturing overseas in a factory that employs perhaps 5000 workers to produce it. Granted, it may cost less per unit to manufacture there, but those 5000 low skilled or semi-skilled workers employed there are exactly the type of person most likely to be unemployed in the US.
So, manufacturing, the great economic engine that for over 100 years was the promise of the high school graduate being able to enter the middle class, is essentially gone, which in great measure explains the growing class rift in our nation.
Note that when manufacturing is sent overseas, the outsourcing company essentially has to teach the foreign corporation how to create the new product, which is new knowledge that a foreign power can use to its own benefit. China is the best example of this. We have successfully trained and paid the Chinese (and others) to beat us at our own game, as evidenced by China's growing economic might and a political presence that now must be reckoned with. Hiring temporary workers, rather than in-house employees - temporary or contract workers are far cheaper to hire than in-house employees who qualify for benefits like health insurance and the retirement program. The company owes no loyalty to temps or contractors, and they can be hired and fired at will. Corporations no longer hire employees with "potential" or experience in parallel or complementary industries - major corporations have ceased to think long-term in many areas, shifting their focus nearly exclusively to near term actions that produce short-term results. Examples of this myopic view range from focusing on the next quarter's stock earnings per share to viewing employees as a short-term commodity rather than long-term assets.
Viewing employees as a commodity results in corporate behavior of hiring what's needed for the moment and discharging them when the immediate need disappears, which in turn results in a goal of only searching for and hiring employees "who can make an immediate contribution to the bottom line." The exponential increase in education, credential, and experience criteria for candidate employees over and above actual position requirements - new hire employees are now expected to "hit the ground running" and be able to "make an immediate contribution to the bottom line." Like a new electronic gadget, a new employee should be able to "work right out of the box."
This new expectation was unheard of only a few years ago during the era when employees were a valuable asset to be invested in over the long term. Then, new hires weren't expected to be able to make meaningful contributions until they had been with a corporation long enough to learned the ropes.
Now, most hiring authorities don't even make the effort to understand what skill set is actually required to perform the job they're hiring for. So, advanced degrees, myriad commercial certificates, and recent experience in everything are specified in the hope that the overkill will result in a person eventually hired that can do the job.
These excessive requirements are then passed to the human resources (HR) department, which dutifully uses them as an inflexible tool to screen the applicant database. The popularity of online employment applications has exacerbated this problem, where the HR person can enter "MBA" as a search term and never see the many capable, well qualified people who are discarded because they don't have this degree.
As an example, you may not need an engineer with an MBA to be the head of a maintenance department. The better candidate may well be a military veteran non-commissioned officer (NCO) who successfully ran a repair depot. Hiring the former NCO would bring superb talent and a broad background into the organization, could probably be hired at a substantial savings for the company, and may stay with the company longer than the highly credentialed engineer who is intent on furthering his career climbing the corporate ladder.
Further, most large corporations have returned to profitability during the Great Recession through extreme cost cutting, mostly through layoffs in their labor force. Employees who survived the purges were told to take on the extra responsibilities of their former colleagues, so technically the same amount of work is being performed by fewer people (which is responsible for the great gains in national productivity figures compiled by the government and widely reported in the media). This approach obviously places all the necessary skill set eggs into fewer baskets, which creates entirely predictable problems when the new multi-taskers eventually leave and corporations try to replace them with another single person who can do the newly defined mega-job, rather than spreading skills (and risk) over several employees. The well documented bias against hiring the unemployed - On the surface this bias may seem counterintuitive, after all, someone who's unemployed is readily available and could probably start Monday, right?
However, the corporate thought process generally follows this logic path; "most corporations layoff their least productive workers during a downsizing, therefore if you're unemployed you were among the least desirable or productive workers or you wouldn't have been laid off. It follows then that there must be something wrong with you that we don't know about, otherwise you would be employed" regardless of your skill set, recent experience, or personal references.
It's unfortunate that this twisted and nonsensical logic that is frequently imposed on situational "outsiders", from marital status to any of society's other membership groupings, has now found its way into corporate hiring mentality.

I recommend Louis Uchitelle's book, The Disposable American, for more on this topic. (I have no financial interest in this recommendation.)

The unemployment bottom line - The unemployment/underemployment rate will little change in 2011, with those fitting the categories above most affected.

Real Estate Foreclosures Will Continue at a Record Pace and Housing Prices Will Remain Depressed in Most Areas of the Country

The government statistics here are shocking, with estimates that nearly half (HALF!) of all homeowners with mortgages have homes that currently appraise for less than the mortgage value; they're "upside down". Further, nearly 20% of all mortgages nationwide were in some stage of foreclosure at the end of 2010, with rates much higher in the hardest hit states of Michigan, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, and California.

The efforts of the banking industry to work through this massive backlog lead to the "robo-signing" fiasco, where foreclosure paperwork was being routinely approved under oath en mass without verifying what was being attested to in the court documents. Faced with active investigations by attorneys-general in all 50 states, banks temporarily suspended foreclosure proceedings during the 4th quarter of 2010 to straighten out the mess they created, which the news media widely (and inaccurately) reported as a sign the economy is improving. However, the backlog must be worked through to get the bad debt off the banks' books, so foreclosures will resume at perhaps even a greater pace when the paperwork is straightened out, probably by the second quarter of 2011.

The huge inventory of foreclosed and otherwise unsold homes will keep housing prices depressed. As long as there are so many unsold homes on the market (with more to arrive when the banks resume foreclosure processing), the oversupply will keep prices down and may drive them ever lower in 2011. Even after the foreclosure backlog is reduced, many new home sale listings will appear on the market when prices start to rise from the concealed backlog of those who want or need to sell, but didn't list when prices were low, which will depress prices again. I wouldn't be surprised if it took until 2015 to work through this immediate and hidden backlog.

The real estate bottom line - in most markets, residential real estate values will remain depressed or will decline further in the high impact states. Now is the time to buy if you have income security, the necessary available cash, an astronomical credit rating to qualify for a mortgage, and can find a bank willing to lend.

Energy Prices Should be Stable

Recent articles in authoritative publications have reported that on-shore crude oil storage is full to capacity and that mothballed tankers functioning simply as floating storage tanks are anchored off the coasts of Great Britain and Iran. A recent inventory showed that 50+ tankers were anchored off of the coast of England alone.

Most oil producing countries derive the majority of their national income from crude oil sales, so their incentive is to keep pumping, regardless of market price, in order to maintain their revenue stream, which will keep supplies abundant. So, the world is awash in crude oil, with inventory stores in excess of demand, putting downward pressure on gasoline prices. Overall, gas prices should remain relatively stable during the first half of the year, absent an unplanned disruption like a major refinery fire or a hurricane that destroys oil platforms. That's good news for every household and corporate budget in our petroleum-based economy.

The wild card is China, again. Prior to the recession, China became a net importer of crude oil and was starting to compete on the world market for the limited supply of crude available (remember 0 per barrel spot market crude?). If other world economies improve and start consuming more oil, then everyone will return to competing for limited energy supplies on the world market. And China will most certainly win any contest here, because their trade surplus has given them an unlimited supply of dollars to buy oil with.

The energy bottom line - energy prices will most likely slowly increase throughout the year as the fragile recovery continues and the economies of the world pick up steam.

An alternative scenario is that energy prices remain stable when China's real estate bubble collapses (see 2011 Economic Forecast - Part 1: The World View from a US Perspective for elaboration on this possibility), causing a large loss of personal wealth for the average Chinese citizen, dramatically driving down internal consumption, and leading to China's own internal economic recession.

Crude prices will not decline because OPEC will adjust production to maintain oil in the -0 price range.

Consumer Spending Will Remain Flat

People out of work spend only what they have to on the barest necessities. People who are afraid they will be next out of work, cut back on spending in order to save for what might come to pass, and also focus on buying only the practical, needed, and necessary. People who are secure in their jobs, but don't want to be seen conspicuously consuming during hard times, will curtail their luxury purchases. Need I say more?

Further, it's underreported that the historically low interest rates have meant a sharp drop in savings interest income for retirees. Retirees dependent on interest income have had to sharply reduce their spending in order to avoid further encroachment on their principal. Typically, the budget cuts include things like the lawn service contract, the beauty shop, dry cleaning, and eating out, all of which impacts local businesses.

The modest economic improvement widely reported during the last half of 2010 is probably the result of businesses simply restocking depleted inventories to low levels, which is good news but not great news. However, the buying surge that turned the 2010 Christmas shopping season into a last minute success means that retailers will start 2011 on better financial footing because they won't have to start the year having to liquidate seasonal inventory (and profits) at 50%-70% off to generate cash flow.

Additional reasons that I think consumer spending will continue to be restrained in 2011 include the increased personal savings rate (an eventual benefit, but lowers consumer spending in the short term), a focus on reducing credit card debt, unplanned new car payments in the household budget resulting from the federal Cash for Clunkers program, and credit that's either not available at any price or only at unfavorable interest rates and terms when it is.

The consumer spending bottom line - consumer spending on non-essential purchases will continue to be restrained in 2011. When consumers do make purchases, they will focus on the needed, necessary, and practical, and avoid luxury items even if they can afford them. Family vacations will be to local or regional destinations, rather than the exotic venues.

The Credit-Starved Economy

It's widely reported that large corporations are currently hoarding large amounts of cash. This stockpile gives them the ability to hire, expand production, and grow organically if they wanted to, but they are refusing to do so in light of what I've shared above. Even a White House meeting with the president in 2010 wasn't enough to persuade them to resume hiring if they can meet market demand with staff on hand.

However, large corporations continue to have aspirations to grow and, rather than slowly growing organically, the method they're often choosing is rapid growth through acquiring their competition. When companies combine, the result may possibly be good for the new, larger corporation (the marriages generally have a 50-50 chance of commercial success), but the result always has two negative economic impacts:
The cash and loans required to buy the competitor removes large amounts of capital from the market that would otherwise be available for mortgages and loans to small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), and Mergers always result in layoffs as the new corporation works to eliminate duplicate functions to help pay for the merger. After all, you don't need two payroll departments, two HR departments, two training departments, etc.

So, large corporate mergers have a break even chance of internal benefit, but nearly always have a negative impact on the economy.

Credit will most likely continue to be tight for SMBs in 2011. Banks say they have money to lend in this area, but the reality is the qualifying bar is set so high that very few will be able to meet it. It's noteworthy that this economic barrier persists despite the availability of government Small Business Administration loan guarantees and the president repeatedly summoning banking CEO's to the White House to urge them to begin lending again.

Finally, a common source of loan collateral for SMBs is no longer available in most cases. In areas hard hit by the collapse of the real estate market, the business owner's home equity line of credit has been completely erased if the property value is now less that the outstanding mortgage balance. Even if there is some equity technically available, few business owners have the stratospheric credit scores necessary to qualify for the loans.

If longer term loans remain unavailable, SMB's will turn to the only recourse they have left, which is financing their need for operating cash with personal credit card debt. Unfortunately, this option is fraught with danger because lending institutions issuing credit cards are rapidly changing card terms, raising interest rates to usurious levels, requiring most new cards to have variable interest rates (a practice which helped get us into this mess in the first place), and lowering credit limits in response to the new federal laws enacted in February 2010. These moves effectively sidestep the legislation intended to curb these abuses.

At a time when banks can borrow at 0% from the fed, it's not uncommon for the credit cards they issue to charge 15% or more on outstanding balances. Further, the new laws do not apply to corporate credit cards, exposing the company to even greater financial risk if the owner is forced to finance via this route.

The credit bottom line - expect little or no improvement in credit availability in 2011.

The Impending Commercial Real Estate Tsunami

Commercial real estate values and investment income will probably take a drubbing as vacant store fronts drive down rents renegotiated in 2011. Failing businesses have created a glut of vacant commercial space in many areas and vacant commercial space doesn't generate income. Surviving business owners will have several alternative locations to choose from and will use the oversupply as leverage to negotiate lower lease rates for the space they do occupy for as far into the future as possible.

And devalued properties of all types will have an adverse effect on local tax digests, forcing local governments to either raise property tax rates or trim operating and school budgets. Which of these choices do you think your local government will make?

Deficit Spending and the Growing Threat of the National Debt

Fiscally, the United States is in a mess and is rapidly approaching the financial meltdown so many European countries are currently experiencing.

The annual budget deficit - the federal government currently spends for every of revenue it receives and the annual spending gap is now over a trillion dollars (a TRILLION dollars) a year. Proposals to close this gap through either increased tax revenue, such as eliminating the homeowners mortgage deduction, or by cutting spending, such as cutting back on Medicare entitlements, meet with howls of constituent protests and go nowhere in a hurry. Note that Medicare alone accounts for 12% of all federal spending and that figure is certain to increase as baby boomers begin to retire in large numbers from the workforce.

The federal government currently spends ,000,000,000 more every 8 hours than it brings in. It's ridiculously obvious that this can't continue for long, yet collectively Congress keeps kicking the can down the road to tomorrow (figuratively speaking) instead of dealing with the issue.

The US government borrows money to support this deficit spending through the sale of US treasury bonds. During World War II the debt was largely financed internally with American citizens buying "war bonds" at rallies that featured real-life war heroes on display.

Today we sell our bonds to foreign powers finance the deficit. Who's buying them? The largest single buyer, by far, is China, followed by Japan, Germany, and the Arab OPEC nations. So, we are effectively (and quietly) being held hostage to those who buy large amounts of our bonds, because if they don't buy them, then we can't operate the federal government. It follows, then, that the nations buying our bonds use this leverage to exercise considerable influence in our behavior behind the scenes. We are no longer a totally independent nation.

Larry Burkett's book, The Illuminati, is a fictional work about a foreign country that brings down the United States using exactly this leverage. For those who say that can't happen, the book makes an interesting read of a plausible scenario. (I have no financial interest in this recommendation.)

The national debt - The accumulated national debt has reached an unimaginable size. The previous administration added more to the national debt than all previous presidents combined, including Ronald Reagan's, and the current administration is on track to exceed this sorry milestone in just its first 4 years in office. We continue to add to this debt, which must be paid back at some point, almost without thought. For example, the president's much heralded tax deal forged at the end of 2010 added 0 billion dollars to the national debt in extended income tax cuts, additional jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed, and a temporary cut in social security taxes without corresponding cuts in social security spending, at the stroke of a pen.

Predictions are, depending on interest rates, for interest payments alone to equal all non-defense spending of the federal budget by perhaps 2015.

There are only 4 ways out of this mess and they will become increasingly painful the longer we, as a nation, avoid changing our spendthrift ways:
Massively cut spending - this will be very difficult, since the federal budget would have to be immediately cut by 1/3 to be able to simply stop borrowing. It would have to be cut even further to begin paying back principal on the debt.
This step will further impact the national unemployment rate as large numbers of government employees are laid off in the downsizing, as we have seen happen in the European Union bailouts. Most popular government programs would have to be axed or pushed off on the states to fund, such as Medicare, which currently consumes 12% of the annual federal budget alone. Enacting huge tax increases - this move will generate howls of protest because no one wants to pay more of their hard-earned money for fewer services. As an example, how easy do you think it would be to eliminate the cherished homeowner's mortgage interest deduction? Defaulting on the debit payments - this is an admission of bankruptcy, pure and simple. If we take this route the government's access to credit on the world market would immediately dry up. After all, if we stop paying on our current bond obligations, how many more bonds do you think we could sell to foreign governments the next time we needed to borrow money? Printing dollar bills - this is the route to hyperinflation, because as the money supply increases the value of each dollar falls. The most often cited example of the folly of taking this route is the Republic of Germany following World War I, as it struggled to meet the surrender terms imposed by the Allies and make payments to the victorious nations for the cost of the war. Germany was forced to print money to meet its financial obligations, sparking the hyperinflation recorded in the pictures of German citizens in the 1920's hauling wheelbarrows of money to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread.

The national debt bottom line - At the present rate of deficit spending, interest payments on the national debt will overwhelm the national budget by 2015. At that point we will be left with 4 stark choices to deal with the mess we've created: massively cut federal spending, enact huge tax increases, default on the debit, print money, or do some combination of these choices. The outlook is stark.

The US National Forecast Bottom Line

What does all this mean? Well, in the near term a realistic forecast is to be cautiously optimistic that the fragile recovery will continue, absent any further shocks to our financial system. However, the economy will be dragging a ball-and-chain along with it in the form of high unemployment, depressed commercial and residential real estate markets, the lack of available credit, the corporate preference to acquire the competition rather than hire new employees, and the looming national debt crisis.

If the scenarios above make sense to you then my suggestion is for small and medium-sized businesses, like professional practices that depend on elective procedures and service industry businesses, to be prepared for clients and patients to continue to defer discretionary spending until at least the second half of 2011. If you're a retailer, you should keep inventories lean for the first half of the year.

And my personal recommendation is for everyone to reduce their personal debt to as close to zero as possible by 2015.

Will this all come to pass? It's hard to tell because we haven't been here before, but I've shared my best guess. Do you think I nailed it or do you have a different opinion? I look forward to your comments.

Five Best Active Adult Communities in the United States

From the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii to the Atlantic coast of Florida, there are countless active adult communities that provide safe, active, and assisted living for senior adults. It is not an easy task to select five from such an extensive list and it is even harder because the interests as well as the needs of people differ so greatly. The good news is that regardless of what your own particular needs and wants might be there is one that will make your list as the top in the country. The following list is my top five Active Adult Communities in the United State.

* Saddle Brooke in Tucson, Arizona. This Arizona active adult community is one of several in the Robson chain located in Arizona and Texas. It is located near the art and culture of Tucson, Arizona, and features a 36 hole golf facility. It is also close to restaurants and shopping, and has a fitness center and several pools onsite.

United States News

* Osprey Cove in the St. Mary's River Basin of Georgia. This Georgia active adult community features a view of Georgia's vast tidal marshland. Money Magazine called Osprey Cove the "number one small town in America." The community features a year round championship golf course designed by Mark McCumber.

* Island Pointe in Merrit Island, Florida. This Florida active adult community features condos with six different floor plans overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway. The Recreation center has basketball courts, tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, and a sauna.

* Beach Villas at Ko Olina, Hawaii. Located on the western side of Honolulu, Hawaii, this beachfront active adult community is the dream come true tropical paradise. It is on the famed Wainanae coast, and features everything one would expect from a Hawaiian beach resort. The rooms all feature natural wood and natural colors that invoke the spirit of the islands and of the sea.

* Yosemite Gardens in Clovis, California. This California active adult community is located near Yosemite National Park, and is famous for the food service that makes it seem more like a fancy restaurant than a retirement community. It has a full variety of social and outdoor activities available, and offers assisted living homes as well as independent living homes.

Your list may differ widely, but these are certainly among the top communities in the country. It would be hard to top them for the richness of the living experience they provide or the beauty of the area around them.

Ethiopian News and About Ethiopia

Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Somalia to the east and Djibouti to the northeast. Its size is 1,100,000 km² with an estimated population of over 85,000,000. It is one of oldest countries in the world and the second most populous in Africa - only second to Nigeria. The population is diverse and has more than 70 different languages. The dominant ethnic group in Ethiopia is the Oromo (40%), followed by the Amhara (30%), and Tigray (6%).

Ethiopia has the most number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa and is famous for its rock-hewn churches, structures that tell the long history about Ethiopia. Ethiopian news is dominated by achievements of its world famous distance athletes. Ethiopia's well-know distance runners include Abebe Bekila, Mamo Woldie, Haile Gebresilassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Deratu Tulu, and Tirunesh Dibaba. It is difficult not to include such athletes when talking about Ethiopia.

United States News

Ethiopia is the origin of the coffee bean, and Africa's largest coffee producer. Coffee is Ethiopia's number one export and the source of most of it foreign currency. Some 12 million Ethiopians depend on coffee and related industries. Coffee is an integral part of Ethiopian culture and about Ethiopia.

The headquarters of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is in Addis Ababa, often labeled Africa's "Diplomatic Capital," as is the headquarters of the African Union (formerly the Organization of African Unity), of which Ethiopia was the principal founder.

Ethiopia is also known for being one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. For much of the past several decades, the country depended on food aid to feed part of its population. The country faced some significant droughts and famine in the last half century. Latest trends are, however, encouraging. For much of the last decade, the country's economy has been growing 5-12% a year.

The government of Ethiopia is federal system of government. The current President is Girma Wolde-Giorgis, the ceremonial head of state. The Prime Minister and the head of the government is Meles Zenawi, who belongs to a coalition of parties known as the EPRDF. Under the present government, opposition parties, Ethiopian news organizations and several press watchdog agencies complain of lack of sufficient press freedom. They allege that citizens have little access to media about Ethiopia other than the state-owned networks, and complain that private newspapers are struggling under restrictive press laws.

Ethiopian news print media include state-owned newspapers such as Addis Zemen and Ethiopian Herald, and private newspapers such as the Ethiopian Reporter, Addis Fortune, Daily Mirror, Addis Admas and Ethiopian Capital. Ethiopian news organizations include the state-owned Ethiopian News Agency and the EPRDF-owned Walta Information Center. Internet-based Ethiopian news organizations are many but small and mostly foreign-based. Many of these sites complain of being blocked and inaccessible from within Ethiopia. Poor internet connectivity in Ethiopia may also be one reason for the lack of well-developed Ethiopian news sources on the internet.

Could the United States Federal Government Collapse?

The short answer is "yes." Let's look at a recent example of empire destruction.

In 1985, the Soviet Union started to collapse. They had a gigantic military budget and were bogged down in a war in Afghanistan. Their economy had become stagnant and had significantly diminished. They had international commerce trade deficits. Unemployment was skyrocketing. Oil prices had plummeted. Mikhail Gorbachev instituted "glasnost," or openness, making it easier for dissent to occur. By 1991, many of the 15 "Republics" had openly revolted against the central government. The Soviet Union was bankrupt, and collapse came in 1991 when Boris Yeltsin rose to power. But Yeltsin became president of Russia, not the USSR. The USSR was over after about 70 years, dying at its own hand.

United States News

The USSR was second only to the USA in might and world power. Yet it collapsed under its own weight. Few predicted it, and almost no one in the American government saw it coming.

Could it happen here?

Over the past 30 years, we've had various bubbles that have inflated and then burst. In the 70s, housing inflated and then burst in the wake of the Savings and Loan debacle. In the 80s, junk bonds came and went. Then in the 90s, internet tech stocks floated over the moon, only to crash and burn shortly thereafter. Now, in the new millennium, housing and transportation have imploded, fueled by the banking/lending fiasco occurring right now.

There do not appear to be any more markets to exploit. Easy money has buried the housing and automobile industries. It is ridiculous to think that a return to the poison of easy money will resurrect those industries. Loans like an Interest-only loan, an Adjustable Rate Mortgage or a Zero-down auto loan with big rebates were financial foolishness all along. More of the same is not a cure.

Since 2002, the Bush Administration has spent over a trillion dollars fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and there is no end in sight.

Our economy is falling into a recession and likely a depression which will make 1929 look mild by comparison. For governments at all levels, that means plummeting tax revenues.

China, Japan and Saudi Arabia hold hundreds of billions in Government bonds. If they redeemed even 5% of their holdings, they would bankrupt the US Federal Government. Yet, there is huge pressure on them to liquidate their holdings so that they do not lose everything when the US finally declares bankruptcy.

The world reserve currency has been the dollar since the end of WWII. Now, some nations are changing from the dollar to a mix of world currencies...a "basket," so to speak...because they fear losing purchasing power as the dollar deflates.

The US Federal Government is printing up TRILLIONS of dollars and throwing those dollars at the perceived problems like never before seen in human history. But it will not work. Destroying the value of our money will not...cannot...fix our economic and political illness.

So, look at the many ways our Federal Government is mirroring the USSR of 1991. The only thing we lack at this time is to see some states begin to resist Federal edicts, and throw off the chains of the Federal Government. Secession is being talked about openly in America once again. When the first state secedes, the end will be near. Remember the words of the Declaration of Independence, that "whenever any form of government becomes destructive..., it is the right of the people to alter it or abolish it, and to institute new Government..."

However, a secession does not have to be the cause. It is just as likely that the states will have to reassert their status as sovereign nations in the aftermath of a Federal bankruptcy.

In my opinion, the demise of the tyrannical United States government will be horrible in its scope, but from it the seeds of liberty will grow anew.

Online Gaming May Become Legalized in United States

In the United States, John Pappas is moving the mountains. He is pushing the million members of Poker Players Alliance to lobby for the legislation to make online gambling legalized in the US. The Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance through his fellow members is supporting the HR2267 the legislation made by Congressman Barney Frank to control and levy Internet gaming. The committee vote on the legislation can happen as early as February 2010. Papas did not hide his ambitions when he said in no unclear terms that this legislation will be crucial for the Poker Players Alliance and the entire poker community. He asked members to rise up to the occasion and make their voices heard.

In the past also the initiatives of the PPA to support online gaming has been influential to support HR2267 and this time also it is no different. Papas asked players of the alliance and the poker community to reach out to Congressmen and express their support for the bill. According to Pappas, this is first time that there will be a vote on legalizing online gaming in the United States. He said that bipartisan support is required to make this bill a success and urged members to alert their Congressmen on the upcoming vote. On the other end Congressmen Barney Frank has seen more success on the bill in the first two weeks of January. The good news is that two politicians, New York Democrat Eliot Engel and Charlie Melancon, a Democrat from Los Angeles supported the "The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2009". This has increased the number of Congressmen endorsing the proposal to 65. More needs to be done and John Papas is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that online poker and gaming gets legalized in the country.

United States News

The bill was up for hearing in early December but without any mark-up as Congressmen debated the step. Papas said that the next big step would be the mark-up and his group has targeted the Congressmen who can support the legislation and is lobbying with them for a favorable outcome. If a mark-up does take place there could be a debate on HR2267 followed by a House vote which would ultimately push the bill favorably. Papas notes that the biggest challenge at this moment is the fear that partisan politics does not act against the bill. If that happens, it will be a setback for online gaming in the country. Barney Frank has scored another point when he and other Congressmen successfully delayed the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) till June 1st 2010. This will give enough time for those in favor of HR2267 to move ahead and maneuver in favor of the bill.

The UIGEA was passed in a late night session just before the election recess in 2006 as a 'must pass' security bill. Hopefully with the delay in implementation of the Act will give time to online gambling industry to propose their point favorably in front of the Government.

The FIRST FAMILY of the United States

The Randolphs:

Peyton Randolph was the first President of the United States and he is a nobleman. I know he is closely connected with the Hapsburgs who lived near the Randolphs and later the Duponts. At the time of Lincoln Paschal Beverly Randolph was a member of the Rosicrucian Council of Three which included Abraham Lincoln. Through this unholy Holy Alliance between secretive parties in England, America and the Church we have the genesis of the New World Order which was in point of fact not really new at all. It was a further empowerment of the nobility or Divine Kings and Popes even though it appeared nations were 'for the people, by the people' in the media (including the pulpits and educational rostrums) that these noble or Merovingian BEES owned. It amuses me greatly to see the sort of academic scholarship that can deny these facts which I am absolutely certain about. Paschal Beverly Randolph was the person who became the leading occultist of this family in America and he is part of a ghastly lineage through occult ritual practices which include soul-grabbing the likes of Crowley and Levi. He proudly states his connection of this sort with Eliphas Levi (AKA Abbé Constant) in his own words so it takes no great research or intuition to prove the point.

United States News

When the famous Rights of Man pamphlet written by secret agent Thomas Paine in England was being printed in America we had another Randolph who got involved. Here is his letter recollecting the issue, written the day before the July fourth holiday in 1791, from the Jeffersonian archives that I hope you enjoy.

"The President is not yet arrived, but we expect him the day after tomorrow. He has probably protracted his journey so as to avoid the ceremonies of to-morrow. We expect daily to hear the events of the expedition under General Scott into the Indian country. Perhaps you will hear it sooner than we shall. Having nothing to communicate in the line of public news I will state something personal. You will observe by the enclosed and preceding papers that I am mentioned on the subject of Paine's pamphlet on the Rights of Man; and you will have seen a note of mine prefixed to that pamphlet whence it has been inferred that I furnished the pamphlet to the printer and procured its publication. This is not true. The fact was this: Mr. Beckley had the only copy of that pamphlet in town. He lent it to Mr. Madison, who lent it to me under the injunction to return it to Mr. Beckley within the day. Beckley came for it before I had finished reading it and desired as soon as I had done I would send it to a Mr. Jonathan B. Smith whose brother was to reprint it. Being an utter stranger to Mr. J. B. Smith I explained to him in a note that I sent the pamphlet to him by order of Mr. Beckley, and to take off somewhat of the dryness of the note I added that I was glad to find it was to he reprinted here, etc., as you have seen in the printed note. I thought so little of this note that I did not even retain a copy of it; and without the least information or suspicion that it would be published, out it comes the next week at the head of the pamphlet. I knew immediately that it would give displeasure to some gentlemen just by the chair of government who were in sentiment with Burke and as much opposed to the sentiments of Paine.

I could not disavow my note, because I had written it. I could not disavow my approbation of the pamphlet, because I was fully in sentiment with it, and it would have been trifling to have disavowed merely the publication of the note approving at the same time of the pamphlet. I determined, therefore, to be utterly silent except so far as verbal explanations could be made." (6)

Revolutionary War 1775 - 1782 - History of United States Military Awards

"Few inventions could be more happily calculated to diffuse the knowledge and preserve the memory of illustrious characters and splendid events, than medals." These words written in 1787 expressed the feelings of the Continental Congress in March 1776 when they instituted the tradition of awarding medals as the highest distinction of national appreciation for our military heroes.

General Washington's success in driving the British from Boston in 1776, General Horatio Gates's victory at Saratoga in 1777, the storming of the British Forts at Stony Point and Paulus Hook in 1779, and General Greene's Southern victories in 1781 all led to the final British surrender at Yorktown in 1781. These were great milestones in the United States' War of Independence. The people and Congress were very proud of their heroes and wished to bestow a sign of national recognition especially upon those officers who had distinguished themselves in battle. As a result, Congress voted to award gold medals to outstanding military leaders. The first approved medal honored George Washington and similar medals were bestowed upon other victors such as General Horatio Gates and Captain John Paul Jones for his naval victory over the Serapis in 1779. Since Benjamin Franklin, the U.S. Ambassador to France at the time, had access to the best of the French Royal engravers, it was only natural for this country to turn to France for help in the actual production of our fi rst military medals. Under Franklin's leadership the Chief Engraver of the Paris Mint produced the first medal in 1781. However, following Franklin's departure from France, the development of the other medals for American heroes was extremely slow until Col. David Humphreys and, later, Thomas Jefferson became involved. It was not until March, 1790, that President Washington received his gold and silver medals approved by Congress over 10 years earlier.

United States News

Unlike present practice, these large table top presentation medals were not designed to be worn on the military uniform. Evidently many thought otherwise since General Horatio Gates' portrait shows his medal hanging from a neck ribbon. It is interesting to note that Thomas Jefferson wanted to see that these medals, of which he was very proud, were known and preserved throughout the world. He intended to present sets of these medals to heads of state, foreign dignitaries and every college in the United States. Jefferson clearly saw medals as the best way to preserve the memory, valor and distinction of America's soldiers and sailors. As a matter of interest, many of these early commemorative medallions are still being struck and offered for sale by the U.S. Mint.

The "Andre" medal broke the custom of restricting the award of medals to successful senior officers and is doubly unique in that it was designed for wear around the neck. The medal was presented by Congress in 1780 to the three enlisted men who captured British Major John Andre with the plans of the West Point fortifications in his boot. Patriots John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams were the recipients of the Andre medal and as time passed were additionally authorized a lifetime pension. Major Andre, the captured British officer, was hung as a spy.

In August 1782, George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit, the first U.S. decoration which had general application to all enlisted men and one which he hoped would inaugurate a permanent awards system. At the same time, he expressed his fundamental awards philosophy when he issued an order from his headquarters at Newburgh, New York, which read: "The General, ever desirous to cherish a virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and encourage every species of military merit, directs that, whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings, over his left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding. Not only instances of unusual gallantry, but also of extraordinary fidelity, and essential service in any way, shall meet with a due reward...the road to glory in a patriot army and a free country is thus opened to all. This order is also to have retrospect to the earliest days of the war, and to be considered a permanent one."

Although special and commemorative medals had been awarded previously, until this point no decoration had been established which honored the private soldier with a reward for special merit. The wording of the order is worth careful study. The object was "to cherish a virtuous ambition" and "to foster and encourage every species of military merit." Note also, that Washington appreciated that every kind of service was important by proposing to reward, "not only instances of unusual gallantry, but also of extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way." And finally, the wonderfully democratic sentence, "the road to glory in a patriotic army and free country is thus opened to all."

Coming as it did, almost a year after Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, the message was never given widespread distribution and, as a result, there were only three known recipients of this badge, Sergeants Elijah Churchill, William Brown and Daniel Bissell. Unfortunately, after the Revolution, the award fell into disuse and disappeared for 150 years. However, it did not die, primarily due to the efforts of the Army's then Chief of Staff, General Douglas MacArthur, (and, by no accident, one of its first recipients). On the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, February 22, 1932, the War Department announced that: "By order of the President of the United States, the Purple Heart, established by Gen. George Washington at Newburgh, New York....is hereby revived out of respect to his memory and military achievements."

Washington's "figure of a heart in purple" was retained as the medal's central theme and embellished with Washington's likeness and his coat of arms. The words "For Military Merit" appear on the reverse as a respectful reference to its worthy predecessor. Towards the end of the war or immediately after, General Washington also authorized a stripe to be sewn on the sleeve of outstanding noncommissioned officers to honor three years of exemplary service or those with six years wore two stripes. These exemplary service or good conduct stripes disappeared after the Revolutionary War along with the original Badge of Military Merit.

However, while Congress would not approve medals for the Revolutionary soldiers the Continental Army officers banded together with their French counterparts and created the Order of the Cincinnati with a very distinctive medal to wear. In the years after the revolution, membership grew and members served in all the major offices of the United States Government as well as many state and local governments. Some, including Thomas Jefferson, were alarmed at the apparent creation of an elite order that excluded enlisted men and in most cases militia officers. However, over time, the order has evolved into a patriotic society and its' first members set the tone by establishing commemorative decorations or medals when none were authorized by Congress. The Republic 1783-1811. While the need for national defense began almost at once to suppress internal rebellions such as Shays' Rebellion (1786-1787), the Whiskey Tax Rebellion in 1794 and a Pennsylvania protest against war taxes called Fries' Rebellion in 1799, the country relied almost exclusively on volunteer or militia forces. The idea of a standing Army seemed a real threat to the civilian government. Minuteman volunteer militias seemed to be the American way besides which it was more economical than paying for a standing army.

During this first thirty plus years of our new nation, regular and volunteer Army and Navy Commanders were honored for their service with large medallions authorized by Congress (as described earlier) or with special commemorative swords often paid for by public subscription from a patriotic and grateful community. Enlisted soldiers and sailors were rewarded in various monetary ways with naval prize money or land grants for soldiers in the newly-acquired territories. With the exception of Congressionally-awarded medals, the Congress rejected the use of military decorations, orders and medals as being in the image of royalty and aristocracy. It was an attitude that lasted almost 100 years until the Army and Navy began to reflect the Republic's rise as a world power at the beginning of the twentieth century. The development of America's pyramid of military honors reflects the nation's ascendancy as a world power beginning with the War with Spain, through its significant role in World War I and finally emerging as leader of the Free World in World War II.

The Self Destruction of the United States (2097 Course Syllabus)

This three hour course will study the history of the United States. We will explore why the United States was merely one of a long line of nations and nation states that began with noble ideals and ended when those ideals were corrupted by government profligacy. We will only briefly touch on the leaders who brought down the country, but will try and develop a better understanding of the people and factors that both created and destroyed the nation in less than three centuries.

The United States, as you will learn, became a society unwilling to protect itself from those who would destroy it from without or within. The destruction of the nation came quickly and oddly enough immediately followed a period when it was the most powerful nation on earth. Within sixty years after what was called World War II, won by the United States, there was political, economic and military decline so rapid that it was barely noticed by the majority of citizens.

United States News

Attacks from without and within by religious terrorists were only partly responsible for the decline. We will attempt to understand a concept known as political correctness which also seemed to prevent the adequate protection of the nation's people. An example of this political correctness might be that while the terrorists were all from one religion and primarily middle eastern, for fear of damaging individuals who met this profile, great effort was made not to investigate these individuals until after they had committed a terrorist act.

The political correctness went so far as to keep the government from even using the term terrorist. While it seems difficult to believe now, many people died because of their unwillingness to identify and stop a known enemy. Our course will discuss this seemingly unnatural failure of a basic human instinct; self preservation.

During the same period of time, early 21st century, government spending became enormous and unsustainable. Health care, food, shelter, and many other goods and services were considered rights by the population. In order to make certain that the populace were afforded these rights the government took more and more of the wealth of those who produced. The obvious end result was less production of wealth. This course will not only provide the factual data, but will attempt to understand the reasoning processes leading to the inevitable decline.

We will examine the destruction of health care brought on by passage of what was called universal health care. Without going into great detail, it should be noted that this plan increased taxation and at the same time ended quality health care in the nation. Within twenty years pharmaceutical manufacturers, physicians, and many in related fields fled to tiny nations who welcomed their creativity.

We will briefly explore their failure to control the nation's borders which also contributed to the inability of the government to provide promised goods and services. Aptly named illegal aliens by the millions lined up for health care and other services. More and more the United States became a hodgepodge of people without a similar culture or language. They divided themselves into groups each competing against the others for the ever shrinking wealth of the nation.

We will examine what would make a nation refuse to utilize its own natural resources. It will be clear that if the United States had used its own resources it would have survived much longer. It was a nation that sent a substantial amount of its wealth overseas to countries that were not friendly, while at the same time refusing to use the resources under its own soil.

As we look back on failed nations it is always interesting to note how close they came to taking another path. As we study the failure of this nation we will see that changing a few votes in their legislative branch could well have sent the country on an entirely different course. In the case of the United States, however, the most interesting point is likely the extremely rapid decline. Until that point in history no nation had reached such a peak and fallen to such depths in so short a time.

By focusing on a failed nation with every tool to be successful you should take from this course valuable lessons in self governance.
